Default 2003 ION 3...got an oil change, now my engine is shot

All right, last thursday i got an oil change and saturday evening my car is breaking down.

Sounded like it was an alternator problem but the auto shop told me that they removed the valve cover only to find the top of the engine was lacking oil and that the cam bearings melted out.

The place i got the oil change done at used to use quaker state filters but now they switched to "performax" oil filters. The filter didn't have any kind of rubber ring on it like usual filters do.

I'm wondering if that is a bum filter or something, or if they messed something up when they were doing the oil change.

any thoughts, suggestions? i'd really appreciate it, i don't wanna pay $5,000 or get a new car.

no oil leaked out

the place that did the oil change said that if it comes down to a product failure (oil filter) then the "performax" oil filter people will pay for everything

i think this place screwed something up in my car, didn't install it right or something, because my car ran fine before the oil change and i don't play around under the hood, no oil lights lit up, engine never heated up past normal...that is the only thing that makes sense to me

You need to take it to (or have it towed to) an independent shop or a Saturn dealer, anyone BUT the place that did the oil change. Get their honest assessment. I'd be real suspicious that the oil change place might try to slip in the 3 quarts they forgot to put in, or otherwise cover their tracks, if the oil change is really what the problem was. You don't say how far/fast you drove the car after the change, but I'm suspicious that anything they'd do would take 2 days to show up...

well, the auto shop that looked at it said that there was plenty of oil in it and it was clean and all that good stuff...it's just that something got screwed up and no oil got into my engine

i don't drive my car really hard or anything and i probably drove about 150 miles after the oil change when the problem occurred

when the 2.2 ecotec first came out in the ion there were 2 different oil filter designs based on the design of the screw on oil filter cap, you could not use the old design in a newer style or so, check service bulletins. I also picked up a filter at the daler recently and the pointed down side was shorter than the one I removed, took it back and they gave me the correct one, so it is possible it is a filter problem, one design does not keep oil pressure up I believe. Take it to a dealer so they can check oil filter length/design that independent used versus factory filter.

here is the original bulletin, but also check length/style of filter they used

#03-00-90-003: Info - Oil Filter Cap Assembly and Oil Filter Element Design Change - (Sep 26, 2003)

Subject: Oil Filter Cap Assembly and Oil Filter Element Design Change

Models: 2000-2004 Saturn L-Series Vehicles

2002-2004 Saturn VUE Vehicles

2003-2004 Saturn ION Vehicles

with 2.0L or 2.2L 4-Cylinder Engine (VINS D, F, P -- RPOs L61, LSJ)

Attention: Parts Manager and Technician

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Purpose
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information about a new design oil filter cap assembly (P/N 12580254) and oil filter element (P/N 12579143) that has been released for service on 2.2L 4-cylinder engines (RPO L61) and supercharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engines (RPO LSJ).

Important: Always inspect for new design oil filter cap. If a new design oil filter cap (P/N 12580254) is present, the new design oil filter element (P/N 12579143) must be used to service this vehicle.

Old Design Oil Filter Cap (left) and New Design Oil Filter Cap (right)

The new design oil filter cap can be identified by the rounded contour of the outer edges, rather than the flat edges on the previous designs. This new design oil filter cap is intended to backservice all previous model year vehicles. The new design oil filter element must be used to service vehicles with this new design oil filter cap. Refer to the "Parts Compatibility" table included in this bulletin for more information.

Notice: Do NOT use an old design oil filter element (P/N 22685727) in combination with the new design oil filter cap . The bypass valve in the new design oil filter cap is designed with increased relief pressure. Use of an old design oil filter element with the new design oil filter cap could result in damage to the engine.

Old Design Oil Filter Element (left) and New Design Oil Filter Element (right)

The new design oil filter element can be identified by a slightly smaller inside diameter as well as straight vertical pleats, rather than the previous zigzag pleats. The new design oil filter element can be used with all vehicles listed in the "Models Affected" section that are equipped with 2.2L 4-cylinder engines (RPO L61) or supercharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engines (RPO LSJ).

That about tells it all. I'd have an independent shop (prefereably a Saturn dealer) remove the filter and cap and provide a written report of the findings. Pay them for this service and make it clear that it may be used in litigation so they don't half-donkey it.

on the surface, this sounds like more GM incompitence. Too many oil filter options for specific cars? Have to be a blood scking lawyer to figure everything out.

I shed a tear for your ION.

It's the reason why I do my own oil changes and other basic maintenance outside of the free ones the dealer gave me. I know EXACTLY what my ION needs and when. Perhaps I have trust issues...no, I know I do. Either way, best of luck to you.

Could this be a case of the early 2.2's and their "oiling problem", where there wasn't enough oil getting to the timing chain? There were a few problems of this sort early on and a repair procedure.

At any rate: What was the diagnosis ? What actually did happen ?

Do a search under "Ecotec Engine Failure" or "Timing Chain Oiler Failure" to find links to what I am trying to [badly] explain.

Hope that helps a little
