Default Why is there oil on my spark plug? SC1 1995

Hello everyone new here. So I just had my 1995 Saturn SC1 rebuilt. I drove it for 300 miles and it started to jerk on me. Check the plugs and found oil on the number 4 plug. I went back to the shop that rebuilt my engine and they want me to have someone do a cylinder leak test. If so why? Should a compression test be good enough? They also want me to test the fuel injectors even though its oil on the plug not a mixture of oil and gas and it does not smell of gas. I sure could use some help with this .

Thanks

If you have oil on the spark plug the odds are great that you have a valve cover leak, check for oil on the outside of the plug and boot. If none then get the rebuild shop to run a compression test. An engine that is misfiring is not a candidate for a leak down test but it is definitely in need of a compression test.

Exactly what brand and type or number of plugs are in the engine??

Autolite plugs and Bosch wires then changed wires and plugs to NGK plugs and Ultima Select wires and still have the same problem.

If you have oil on all 4 plugs try keeping the RPM at 2500-3000 max and do not drive at constant speed. I would also suggest that a compression test be run on all 4 cylinders.

My mechanic will do compression test tomorrow. The rebuild shop said to test the fuel injectors. Why? Any Ideas?

Bad injector will cause a miss as well but first check compression and then there is more. Injector testing is not a simple task as you get to swap #4 with another one so the fuel rail has to come off and that is a job that can end up creating problems.

I'm not following how they're associating fuel injectors with oil on plugs.

Did they replace valve seals when they did the rebuild?

The are equating the misfire with oil pumping past new rings. They are guessing ...

Only 1 plug is fouling out. Engine has 600 miles on rebuild and #4 fouled out at 200 miles and has now done it again at 600 total. Not valve seals or failed injector.

What exactly did they do that's considered a rebuild?

That question has yet to get a detailed answer. Presently checking compression, injector resistance etc and whatever the OPs mechanic decides to check. My guess is it was a hone, re-ring, and bearings for the lower end. No idea on head. Just a hone & re-ring would explain oil in #4 only.

Stories like this are why I learned to work on cars. My first SL1, a blackberry 99, was my Uncle Ben. Killed by a 5-Minute-Oil-Change and some other guy who was also a moron.

Time for rebuild #2 before your Saturn goes Apollo I.
