Wrench Average Oil Use?

I have a 1998 Saturn SL2 with over 100k miles...
My question is what should the average oil use be?
I know they are known to use oil, Just curious as to how much.
I have put 1600 miles on mine since i bought it and have had to put in 2+ Qts..
If this is too much what would my problem be?

Thanks in advance,
Dale

people use different amounts of oil depending on their car

I've read of people using a quart every 100 miles, BAD
to not needing any at all

On mine 98 SL2 (104k) I run about every 450 miles
On dad's 98 SL1 (260k) about every 1500 miles

Wife's SC1 uses about a quart every 2 tanks of gas, mine used to use about the same, but it has a fresh engine now that seems to use none. It all has to do with the condition of the engine. When reach the point that you literally have to fill the oil and check the gas (can't go between fillups without topping off the oil), that's when you should really worry, IMO. Until then, it's within a pretty normal range for an S-Series with some age & miles on it. Really it's up to you & how inconvenient it is for you. Be sure to check for leaks.

Most manufacturers would say your vehicle has acceptable oil usage if it goes 800-1000 per quart of oil.

I am using around 1 quart per 750 miles. I am at 152,000 miles. Highway trips basically double the amount I use. I would say what you are experiencing is normal. The ring and piston design tends to be the problem. You may want to try a MMO soak (piston soak with Marvel Mystery Oil) to see if it can free up dirty oil control rings. The How-To Library has details. Luke took his 95 SL2 over 500,000 miles. He was using about 1 quart per 200 miles by then. So, your car can go a long time just adding and changing the oil. A common area that leaks is the cam cover gasket.

That is probably about where my SL2 is.. that's nothing in my opinion.. (cost, hassle-wise)

I top it up more regularly though, as in, I don't wait to add a qt, I keep it at the full line. (not more)

I also use Valvoline Maxlife Full Syn and burn half a quart every 4000 on my 2001 sl-1 104.000 miles.

While under warranty a quart every 2000 miles is within spec.

Mine used minimal oil (within spec) until it passed around 75K miles, then consumption started to increase noticeably.

At the moment (a bit over 150K miles, it uses perhaps a quart every 600 miles or so, but that varies with the type of driving. A lot of time near/over 3000 RPM can increase oil consumption dramatically.

Things believed to lead to increased oil consumption:
A history of extended oil change intervals (i.e., driving with dirty oil)
Driving while low on oil (reduces life of oil and additives)
High RPM driving
extensive use of engine braking (high vacuum sucks oil past valve guides???)

Things that might help, or at least prevent further increases include:
Frequent oil changes (no more than 3000 miles)
Piston soak (MMO. GM Top Engine cleaner, etc.)
A couple AutoRx treatment cycles
Switch to 10W-30 oil
Use a good synthetic oil from day one.
Avoid high RPM and engine braking
Fix any oil leaks (e.g., drain plug, cam cover, etc.)

Except for the 10W-30, engine braking, and limiting RPM, the above are oriented to cleaning the oil control rings.

Note that by and large, adding oil is cheaper than an engine overhaul so run your numbers and make you decision.

Note over time, really excessive oil consumption may reduce the life of the CATCON and O2 sensor, but I do not know what that threshold is.

I usually don't need to add any between changes on mine. It might go down about a pint in 5,000km/3,000 miles. I've been using Auto-rx to keep it clean.

my 99 SW2 is at 204k and see's 230 miles a day right now, most at 80+mph. Last check was around a quart every 2500 or so. It's usually close to an oil change before I put any in. It's actually gotten better in the last 50k....... I haven't quite figured THAT out but I won't complain!! I'm so hapy with my Saturns over the years that I just put my son in an 02 SC2 and am building my own 02 SL2 to replace the wagon when it's time to put it down. I run well over 50k a year on my cars....HARD interstate miles too!

the girlfriend's '95 SC2 does a quart every 225 miles. sometimes it's down to a quart every 150 miles if it's all city driving.

i just get the cheapest oil possible since it's not in there long.

I know the piston design inherently lends itself to oil usage. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I don't usually have to add anything between oil changes (about 5000 miles).

I hope you're not buying the oil that's SB rated that some stores sell for cheap. API SB oil will ruin your motor, you should have a modern API rating of at least SJ.

Hmm, that's strange. I am always afraid to run my car over 3K RPM while shifting or driving on the freeway because I have heard that they burn much more oil this way. I am also taking it easy because my car has an unknown maintenance history with almost 180K miles and it will smoke a little bit if I rev it and let off the accelerator (worn valve seals)

So far I have driven 130 miles and the oil level hasn't moved but my gas gauge sure has I put in 6 gallons when it was on the yellow mark for "E" and the gauge went to a hair under 3/4 now with my trip meter reading 130 miles the gauge is just under 1/4 but I am going to wait until it is almost on "E" again (gas went way up here anyways )

What I had 10 S-Cars and not a one needed oil added between the 7,000 mile MOBIL-1 oil changes. I must have been doing something wrong.
