Hey all,
I just got done cleaning my EGR Valve on my 94 SL2 DOHC. I tried starting the engine with the EGR valve off (it is the vacuum type, btw) and it blew a lot of crap and what looked like liquid out of the holes (I may have gotten a bit of carb cleaner in there, but it wasn't *that* much). Then there was a sound like a back fire, so I instantly let off of the starter. I have since been unable to get the engine to turn over, with or without the EGR Valve. No codes either. Even tried letting it 'air out'. Any one have some ideas? It will crank and crank and crank, then occasionally feel like it is about to start. -Will

![]() ![]() The egr valve didn't break anything as much as it was coincidence when the boom announced something went wrong. Cranking and no engine firing up may be the classic crank position sensor (CPS) failure. A spark test is needed. Remove the coil wires, noting the firing order, and have someone crank the engine over while you look for sparks across the coils. No spark means the cps just died. Replace it from any auto store stocking it. Its behind and above the starter and mounted with one 10mm bolt. The other failure, sometimes, is the ignition module where the two ignition coils mount onto.

Will test that tomorrow AM (the spark test that is).
As for what brought me to this point, and correct my thinking if it is wrong, but it looks like a bad PCV valve with too much blow by, because when I pulled the plugs earlier, they were fouled in a very bad way (like chunkies of oil between the elements). That helped foul up the EGR valve, and is possible it could foul up the O2 sensor as well (I am not going on symptoms here, rather trying to use logic). Thanks guys'n'gals, I'll check the spark tomorrow AM when I replace the spark plugs.

You also need to replace the ECTS with the two wire connector with a brass one. This will also cause a no start situation.
