Default Jumper cables on a 2002 sl2 Saturn battery.... stupid question?

Well for the first time in my life I somehow left my lights on and was faced with a dead battery the other day. No problem I thought, I'll just use my car jump starter I have handy....

Alas, I had huge issues trying to do this! No matter what I tried I couldn't get a good contact with the side mounted battery posts -there is a very small post bolt that protrudes out -but barely -and the clip I had would just keep sliding off -let alone there was hardly a good contact anyway. After 10 minutes of trying, I gave up and called AAA.

The AAA guy had something I've never seen before; they looked like 2 long metal slides that he pushed in between each battery post and connector bolt that stuck straight up. He then was very easily able to attach two (large) clips from a battery jump starter and I had the engine up and running in no time at all.

Of course now I could kick myself as I didn't ask him what these "metal slides" were called. They would seem to be excellent to have for just such a situation (though the only thing I didn't care for is that neither one was insulated so I wouldn't want them flopping around and touching each other!) I did go online and found battery extender connectors that screw into your existing post, but the problem with these is that you'd have to install and leave them there (with a now slightly protruding positive post that doesn't have a protective cover which I don't like the idea of) -and I do like the idea of these "metal slides" that can be kept with the battery charger and used with any car that needs it.

So.... anybody have similar issues? What did you do? Does anyone know the official name for these "metal slides"?

I did a search on Amazon for "side post battery jumper adapter" and found them sold as side terminal adapters.

I think these are them but let me know if I'm wrong. Note in the second photo how you insert into the battery cable clamps to get a good connection. They don't go onto the battery but rather into the clamps then onto the battery.

Ah, those be them -I think I'm going to invest in a pair! Excellent and thanks for the help. I tried googling on loads of different terms and just missed finding them.

Some jumper cables have tangs like those built into them for GM batteries. probably cheaper now for those adapters but if you need new jumper cables in the future and still have a GM battery look for the extension tang on them.

I installed these for my desulfation module.

I haven’t needed to jump it but it’s much bigger than the little 5/16” bolt head.
