Question 2001 Saturn L300 (L81/3.0L V6) - Fuel Line Connectors (2x) (Disconnect Difficulties)

I started to remove the fuel line connectors with my fuel line disconnect kit. I have every possible type of disconnect tool within this kit from all my research.

It seems as if the metal "spikes" are getting in the way of my disconnect tool.

Does anyone know if I need to somehow remove the spikes? Is this something that is done prior to using a disconnect tool?

A video I watched on YouTube doesn't show the spikes that my L300 has. The ones that you can "spin" or "rotate" as I spoke to someone regarding before (I believe fdryer) and we were checking for fuel leaks.

The video on YouTube is entitled: "DIY Removing a Push Lock Fuel Line Fitting".

I read here on a different thread that our L300's are 3/8th. The small round tool that I was using as demonstrated in the YouTube video; uses this one. (Same exact push lock fuel line fitting), only without the "spikes". ... which seem to get in the way of being able to push the disconnect tool in.

What do the experts advise in this situation? I have included pictures to demonstrate the kit w/ the all the disconnect tool types and the one that I attempted to disconnect with; finding this difficulty!

Thanks again!

~ Brandon

I bought a $8 dollar tool from an automotive store which simply slides into the junction and releases the line connection. There is no spinning required.

Those are the factory safety retainers. Remove those then your disconnect tool will work. Reinstall after your repairs are complete.

Hey 02 LW300,

Good to see a response from you. Factory safety retainers; 10-4. How do I go about removing them sir?

Best Regards,

I could never remember all the terms describing items. Factory retaining clip is one of them. Stainless steel. This video should help; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9U1tfLiYEA. Ignore the title and fast forward to around the 5:06 mark to see how this retaining clip is removed before inserting the fuel line disconnect tool. The retaining clip is reused to ensure a connection doesn't come apart from the high pressures generated in the fuel rail. The person describing the disconnect clip is incorrect as the clip is a backup retainer to ensure the fuel lines won't disconnect after correct reconnection.

If you google search for GM/Saturn steel fuel line service, you may come across info explaining how they work and the tool needed to disconnect them otherwise the video and few seconds of removing the stainless clip is all that's needed prior to using the fuel disconnect tool. I have a plastic one for this as I needed it when removing the upper engine parts for t-stat replacement.

Gallery A: Factory Retaining Clip Removals
Tools: Small Needle Nose Pliers

(I had to remove the fuel rail bolt with a E8 torx socket before using the tool on the rear fuel rail).

You may have to swivel (rotate) the rear Factory Retaining Clip backwards to be able to pull it out correctly without any impediments.

Thumbs Up [SOLVED] Re: 2001 Saturn L300 (L81/3.0L V6) - Fuel Line Connectors (2x)

Gallery B: Factory Retaining Clip Removals
Tools: 3/8th Blue Fuel Disconnect Tool (From the Universal Kit at amazon for GM's).

(I had to remove the fuel rail bolt with a E8 torx socket before using the tool on the rear fuel rail).

I had the best success using the Blue 3/8th Disconnect Tool. It's much sturdier than the plastic ones that appear to work. I had to pull a little on the left side of the Flexi Fuel Line once firmly pressed in on the right side (Disconnect Tool Side) and sure enough; ready to move forward!

Thanks again Gentlemen!

Best Regards,

~ Brandon

Those are great pictures, that will explain how it works to the new mechanics. I have been doing this for so long I forget about people just starting out repairing cars. My 95 Ford motorhome has those same clips holding the fuel filter and line together.
