What effects do smaller wheels have on the handling? Like, a pair of Honda Civic HX wheels which are 14in and only 11lbs. Or the 13in VX wheels, which are 9lbs. I think 13in would be a tad bit too small though!

i actually tried to fit a set of 13s to my car at a race. believe it or not, they fit over the front calipers fine, it's the rears that contact the bleeder screw and wouldn't go on at all...

I could have run unopposed and be regional champion in STX!
Yes, Eric, there is no reliable STX competition over here either. But certainly stay in ST--unless you want to try R-compounds. I would try one of the 225/45R15s for ST. There are not many good tire/wheel options in 16" rims.

The 245/35R17 Toyos can fit. They are the same section width as the 225/45R15 A6s that people have used on HS Saturns.

The 13"s are cool. I am sure you could modify those bleeders!

Oh I have tried R-compounds and ran them on my 96 SC2 in 2000, 2001-02 but I got tired of changing tires and joined the cool kids in Street Touring after cording my last set of Kumho Escta V700 tires.

Trust me the 17's are lighter than those almost solid chunks of aluminum that came on mine from the factory.

i am 100% sure of the following:

on the s-series saturns, all else equal, a 15" wheel/tire combo will beat a 17" wheel/tire combo EVERY SINGLE TIME on a road-course race track.

the grip with a 15" wheel is more linear, gives more feedback to the driver and is a thousand times easier to balance on the edge of traction than a 17" wheel.

believe what you want. but if you don't know, don't say...

I'm 100% sure of this, 17's made my car handle better, or it least it feels better to me and that is what counts.

Stick with the 15's, I don't know anything, and opinions aren't allowed on this forum.

Comparing 15's to 17's without more details is pointless. *Some* 17's are lighter than *some* 15's, so weight comparisons completely depend on the specific wheels, though 15's will tend to be lighter because they're smaller (usually both in diameter and width). 17's may very well handle better if they're lighter or at least not substantially heavier, but are wider and have a wider tire on them. Usually the biggest question of which will handle better is going to depend on the tire that's on each wheel.

Opinions are certainly allowed, but we're not going to overlook facts so someone can feel good about their opinion. Not sure why you're so upset - it's entirely possible that the 17's you bought are lighter than the alloys you had, and that your car handles better with them. Without knowing the specific wheels you had and have and the tires that were/are on each, we can't dispute that.

I'm not upset, but for S3aturnR to say 15" wheel tire combo will beat a 17" wheel tire combo everytime is incorrect as well.
Also, for him to say "if you don't know, don't say" means to me that he thinks he knows everything, and if you don't agree with him don't post.

i've learned a lot of things the hard way. the 15" wheel vs. 17" wheel issue is one of those things. just trying to help out. 17s look great if you're not concerned too much about going fast.

everybody's opinion counts unless, of course, it's wrong...

what brand and model 17" wheels do you have that weigh less than factory 15" alloy wheels? also what brand and model tires are you using? here's a guide to the factory wheels and some weights are listed.
http://www.evilplastic.com/wheels.htm
my 92 SC came with geartooth wheels that I kept and used on my 96 SC2 for autocross and open track event. later on I got 16x7" American Racing AR-25 wheels that weighed 15 lbs which is about the same as my OE geartooth wheels. I sold them and I got 15x7 MB weapon wheels for 02 SC2 that weigh 12.8 lbs. I used a Hankook R-S2 tire on both set of wheels -- 205/50-16 on the 16" and 205/50-15 on the 15" wheels. with the lighter 15" wheels, the car accelerated and turned in noticeably better.

What was the width difference? I'm betting you went from a 15" standard tire to a wider 17" performance tire. Get a wider performance tire on your 15" rims and I bet you can't tell the difference between the rim height.

i had 18s on my '02, they fit fine. i had 17s on my '93, those also fit fine. the 17s had 205/45/17 rubber, the 18s were 215/35/18.

@ OP:
Is your car lowered? if so, which springs?
If not, lower it first; then get some wheels.
Stock wheels actually look pretty good on a lowered S.
Especially the sawtooths.

17s may rub depending on the tire.
what size tire are you planning on?
