Question disabling door open chime

when i first bought my 97 sl2 about a year and a half it never made the door chime until one day my battery died (left the lights on) and when i charged it back up, everything had reset. since that day, i've had the damn annoying door chime come on.

it bugs because i like to have the door open when i'm cleaning the inside of my car listening to music, and the chime is a pain.

does anyone know of how to disable the door open chime? any help would be appreciated.

There are several other things (like radio preset memory) tied in with the chime to discourage you from disconnecting it. If it bugs you that much you can disable it at the switch or find a way to permanently depress it. Welcome to the board, by the way.

When working on the car with the door open, engine off. Just remove and then reinsert the key...VIOLA! the chime will be off! Until the next time the car is started or the door open/closed.

But then he can't listen to music, Wolf.
I would pull the switch out, and jump the wires together, personally.
I have to ask.. the name.. are you a Mac user too?

big time mac user. i've got two macs at work and a powerbook at home. all of them run os x. apple can't lose now - good looking os with a unix core. it's heaven...next to the ion of course

back to the thread though...i've considered taking out the switch, but, i'd prefer not to. i'd like to keep it as a last resort. what boggles me is why did it not chime before the battery died?

i once tried pulling the fuse labled door chime, but as dach mentioned, the radio stopped working. but that was with my stock radio. i haven't tried it again since, and now i have a pioneer deck. do you think it might do the same thing again?

btw - thanks for the welcome, dach.

What makes me curious that I have noticed at work is .. if you leave the door open and chiming for so long.. the chime and dome light blink off for a second every minute or so. Wolf - do you know why this is?

Default chime disable

The chime is located on the back side of the fuse box under the radio. It is a or should be a blue box.I was having the same problem.I pulled mine out, opened it up and pulled out the metal bar that vibrates against a metal disk to make the chime noise. Then i replaced. If you dont replace it, your domelight when you open up your door will not work, nor will your dash lights.Hope this helps. Ohio,
I "think" that's the "battery saver" trying to shut down the dome light, which it can't do with the door open and the key in the ignition.

The chime fuse is attached to the chime, dome light, stereo (i forget if it's the switched power line or both), and the rear defroster as far as I have discovered. So be ready to lose those too.
