2008 Vue, 105k, 4cyl. Drivers side of windshield, a film appears on the inside, defroster no help. Very faint sweet smell. Gotta feeling I have a leak. Dealer says if it is the heat core, appx 1200 bucks. Basically the whole dash will come out. ANybody been throught this?

One way to test the cooling system and indirectly determine if a leak is occurring in the heater core would be borrowing a cooling system pressure test kit. Autozone or Advance Auto may have this kit, consisting of a hand held air pump, various adapters to fit onto coolant containers and caps. Be sure the kit has the right adapters otherwise you're SOL. Pressurizing the cooling system thru the coolant container (do not pressurize above the cap's rated pressure) is the safest way to find leaks. A cold cooling system under pressurize can't scald anyone while allowing an extensive search to find the source of a leak. Since the heater core is the only enclosed part, ensuring the entire cooling system is leak free while losing pressure may allow you to conclude a heater core leak by process of elimination.

If you're lucky, the heater core is fine and you'll find a leak elsewhere at much lower cost.
