1999 SL2
Question shifter cable help

I have a 99 sl2 5 speed. On my way home from work a few days ago, I down shifted into 3rd gear to exit I-75 and when I went to upshift again my gear shift was completely free from all resistance(like it was not attached to anything at all). I was stuck in third gear but I managed to get home safely.

I discovered that one of my shifter cables had broken near the transmission. I purchased and installed new cables but now cant shift into any of the gears. The shifter seems to be stuck sort of leaning towards the passenger side of the car. I can shift into what I think is 1st gear but it is in the 3rd gears position. I installed everything back into the car the way it was but I still cant figure it out. Is there a special way to adjust these cables. The manual says installation is the reverse of removal. Am I missing something?

I have been searching these forums for a few hours but I can't find anyone else with this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
