2005 ION-3 Quad Coupe
Default ATF change question

Hi, doing the first ATF change on my Ion, about 96k miles.

1. Does it matter which brand Dex 6 I use? I'll try to grab the GM labeled but if it doesn't matter, I'll get Mobil 1.

2. Is it just a drain and fill job, or do you really need to drop that pan and change the gasket and everything? There isn't a conventional filter on these cars right?

I am curious about this too. Mine is a 2003 with 73K on it and it is starting every once in a while to slip I think when it shifts into second or third. Not sure. I see no way to even check the transmission fluid much less change it. Some sites say you remove a bolt and the fill tube other sites say its maintenance free and you should not have to do anything. I am unsure and do not want to undo bolts on a transmission.

I have always had trucks before I could crawl under, drop the pan and do a fluid/filter change maybe added some Lucas oil and get more miles out of them. This is the first front wheel drive car I have ever had.

You both have different transaxles with different service procedures. 2003 & 2004 Sedans used an Aisin Transaxle 2005 and later sedans used a GM transaxle. Both use different fluids, and fill procedures.

Yeah, I've read that the transmissions are different... still need to know about whether I need to change the gasket/filter on mine though, or if I just do a drain and fill.

It's your decision, if it we're mine I'd change the filter when I drop the pan. Filling that particular transaxle is the fun part, the car must level when you fill it, but you have to be able to get under it to install the level plug.

advance is showing a filter kit for that car, in this case, since there is one, replace it.

I've been doing a lot of research lately on transmission maintenance and everything (good) I've read recommends replacing the filter and the gasket.

What transmission are you using in your '03 Coupe Jason? You might need to change more then the Filter and Gasket if you are still running the original CVT.

Good Luck.

lgodave,

Yes, sigh, I'm still running the CVT... It's actually my 3rd. First was rebuild (I payed), second was replaced (dealer paid). I'm hopeful this will go well. I'd like the car to last as long as possible...that said, if the CVT dies again I won't be getting another. I'll have to try the tranny swap with the other AT.

Thanks for the encouragement
