Hello, I recently swapped motors. I swapped a 2001 sc1 dohc with a 2000 sl2 dohc and now the automatic transmission shifts erratically. The service engine light is on as well. When on the highway it upshifts between drive and 2nd and from a stop it seems like it starts in drive instead of first. Any ideas?

The sc1 comes from the factory with a SOHC engine, the sl2 comes with a DOHC engine, their transmisions DO NOT interchange. They will mount in & fit, but won't work properly.
If the car came with a DOHC engine, you need a transmission from a DOHC car. Search these forums, you will find this is true, I promise.

2001 SC1 would not be DOHC.

rickystarshine is correct. The tranny's are different. Although either tranny will bolt up to either engine, and appear to be identical, the gear ratio's are not the same. I tried it and had the same results as you. Sure did suck to have to do all that work again. One good thing came of it...the whole removal/installation process is now a piece of cake. What a way to learn.

So all you done was replace your 2001 dohc engine with a 2000 dohc? Are you using the 2001 tranny, or did you replace it with the engine?
The sc, sl, sw doesn't matter as long as both are dohc engines. |

Just swapped the motor. The original transmission is still with the car. The only thing we had to do was move the fuel rail over from the original motor. The motor runs great.

Have you ran the codes from the service engine yet? I assume you never had the shifter linkage unhooked if you only pulled the motor.

I'll know tomorrow what codes it's putting out. The linkage has not been touched.

Did you disconnect the elec. connector on top of the tranny to help move the harness out of the way? If so, maybe it's not back on right. How about all the fuses under the hood? Any chance any of those got burned during re-hookup? Why did you use a different fuel rail?

For some reason the fuel rails weren't the same.

Fuel rails are the same for 3rd gen DOHC. The only reason they would be different is if you have a different intake manifold (which all DOHC of the 3rd gen have the same type) and therefore not a 3rd gen DOHC engine.
However, whether or not its a DOHC or SOHC should have NO effect on the tranny operations since (assuming here) you are using the ORIGINAL PCM and did not swap it with anything else (such as the PCM from the donor car). So my guess' are this: -Your donor engine has the stock ECTS in it. Replace it with a brass one. Directions in the how-to library. - You could have pinched some wires between the block and bell housing. Check over the entire seam. -Get the SES codes. -Make sure you have NO extra wires. Also make sure the two grounds to the back of the engine under the first intake runner are connected (many like to forget these two guys).

What years are the second generation motors? I'll have to check the VIN on the motor. I bought the replacement engine from a parts yard in Ohio. The VIN they gave me said it was from a 2001 SL2. Sounds like they might have misrepresented what they had. I'll know more tomorrow.

1G8ZK5273YZ259382 is the one the parts yard gave me. I'll verify with the VIN on the motor tomorrow.

The transmission should not care what engine it has in front of it. You could put an electric motor in front of the auto trans and it should still work.
Check the wiring, sensors and connections at the trans. Chances are something is not plugged in at all, or is partially plugged in, damaged or plain broken.

Donor car is a 2000 SL2 automatic. But indeed, if you're using the original PCM, it shouldn't matter. Along with the above advice, check the charging system; donor engine may have a bum alternator.

Well, just replaced the auto transaxle in a 2001 SC@ DOHC and now the shifting is quite erratic. Unplugged the Speedometer sensor, will shift. I have heard about the gear ratio being different in a SOHC motor and i'm guessing thats what the transaxle was from. Now, will the 2001 SOHC Engine Control computer work with the DOHC motor????? thanks!
