Yeah, hein sold his car years ago. In the past, he's said he would remake them if at ~10 people were interested. Not sure is he is still able and willing though

However, he also posted a quick how to. He also posted the McMaster-Carr part number somewhere for the heim joints he used

He didn't make new cables. I think he always started out with jy cable sets and replaced the end joints.

I can vouch from personal experience that Dorman cables are junk. I didn't get 10K out of them before they failed, luckily in my driveway after a 2000km trip. I put a used set of Saturn cables in from a junk yard

99% sure he reused OEM cables (dunno how much he charged, if much over $200 highly likely he bought new OEM cables). You'll have to get the die size from McMaster's listing on the joints to get the threads on the cable correct.

McMaster 6072K31 on the trans
McMaster 6072K154 on the shifter
I *think* they could all be the same joint, except 1 style has the stud in the joint rather than going over the stud on the trans or shifter.

Every single brand of aftermarket shift cables have proven to either be junk out of the box or junk within 15k miles. Some can be patched up with reinforcements where they bend or extra lube, but if you plan on keeping the car a long while you're better off with junkyard cables (just try to verify they're OEM style not aftermarket). The only change I can think of with the cables doesn't stop them from swapping any year/model/engine/trans, the firewall grommet got bolted in (squishing the firewall) sometime after '97 while it was hand-press in like any other grommet before then.

My 2000 Saturn cables were press in, the Dorman was bolt in. The new to me JY ones were press in. From a late 90's SL, can't recall the exact year.

I believe someone over at 6th Sphere custom made some cables with heim joints on the ends. They looked awesome.

Thanks for all the help.

I have one more question --- when going to find some at a wrecking yard -- which year cables are interchangeable?

My car is 98 SL2 DOHC -- which other years/models will work for me as I may have located some from a 2001?

I believe they are all the same. You could look up the PN on Rock Auto for both a '98 and a '2001. Also SOHC vs DOHC should not matter.

Maybe I'll make a set of cables for myself. We will see. It doesn't look super hard.

Thought I posted the link to ShawnV;s How To cable replacement in this thread but must have been in another thread.

http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho....php?p=1679808

OldNuc mentions in that thread that Saturns came from the factory with the push-in grommet at the firewall. If it is a replacement cable set (either OEM or aftermarket), it will have the the plate/stud retainer style
