1994 SL2
Default MP7 Transmission Swapping

I'm going to be buying a valve body from Special Forces, regardless of if that'll fix the transmission issue or not (I figure I can throw it in the new transmission if thats the case, less worry!)

Anyway, if that doesn't turn out to be the issue, I was doing some reading today, and was curious about the gear ratios, and the PCM getting confused and throwing a check engine light because the ratios don't match the original transmission.

The car is a 1998, but has a birthday of 10/97, so I figure it's safe to guess it has a 1997 brain.

Copied from Different Racing:

1991-1997
MP7 Gear Ratio
1st Gear - 2.53
2nd Gear - 1.56
3rd Gear - 1.03
4th Gear - 0.70
Reverse - 2.39
Final Drive - 4.133

Automatic Transmission 1998-2002

1998-2002
MP7 Gear Ratios
1st Gear - 2.53
2nd Gear - 1.56
3rd Gear - 1.03
4th Gear - 0.70
Reverse - 1.91
Final Drive 4.063

I can see that 1, 2, 3, and 4 are all the same from 1991 to 2002, but reverse is different, and so is the final drive. What I want to know is; first, I have a 1995 transmission in my car right now, which I believe to be a replacement.

If I have to get down and dirty and replace the transmission, does this mean I'm limited to 1991 to 1997 only? or can I use any MP7 automatic and the PCM won't care, and will be able to shift though all the gears? I have a 1998, but it was made in 1997.

I'm confused, could someone PLEASE explain this to me before I have to go out and get my hands dirty for nothing?

Default Re: MP7 Transmission Swapping

Also, to add in, if there is an issue with the TCC and the ratios for 1998 and such, what if I just grabbed a PCM from a 1997 or 1996 and used that? Nothing really says much about the cars PCM. I have a very base SL2, no cruise, no power anything.

Any input on brain swapping? It would be easier, I can get PCM's all day long for free.
