Default transmission swapping

I recently order a used transmission to have changed out on my 2000 Sl1 Sohc. After using the vin number on car fax for the on I ordered I learned it was coming off a 1998 Sl2 Dohc. Are these two trany's interchaneable?

If an automatic...no. If manual, yes but CC wont work

NO, the gear ratios are different. The PCM won't shift it correctly. One of our members has been kind enough to post them to show the different gear ratios.

you need to make sure that donor transmission is from a SOHC. there is a identification number stamped on the bell housing that identifies the type of transmission.

If they are automatics, then yes you are completely right. Gear ratios dont match and the SOHC PCM wont know what to do or when to shift. The DOHC PCM would need to be brought over with the DOHC tranny.

However, if they are manuals, then it will work regardless of the PCM. The PCM does not care about shift points or anything on the tranny. The Cruise Control however will not work bc its based of the SOHC gear ratios. Other than that, it should work fine. A DOHC cluster would be nice but ive read of people using the SOHC cluster just fine

Well, the PCM in the manual does know all the gear's ratios. The shift light would be off, and like you said, the cruise control, which is the PCM, won't work.

So what your saying is if I get a DOHC PCM computer for my 2000 SL1 and it will handle a DOCH tranny? Does it have to be a 2000 PCM or does it have to be the same year computer as the Trany itself?

Depends if you have an automatic or a manual.

If an automatic you need a 2000 DOHC PCM with the same options as your car. LowSaturn will correct me if im wrong

Fortunately, in your case, the PCM is only different between the auto and manual. What you will be able to do is get your car programmed at a dealership.

It will work for the transmission but not the engine. Unless you're planning on doing a DOHC swap too.

A 1998 automatic transmision out of a DOHC vehicle simply will not work in a 2000 SOHC. If your car is an anutomatic and the tranny is on its way, you just bought a nice big paper weight.

You really need to let us know what kind of transmission it is to get the best answer, otherwise we're all just wasting our time with speculation.
