1995 SL2
Default A story & a Q about swapping parts

Hello,

First, a story. It's been quite an exciting holiday season for me. During a recent snow storm, on the 23rd, my '95 SL2 was broadsided by a 16000 pound semi-truck. I was driving carefully on 28th street in the right lane and decided to decelerate because of an upcoming red light. I then noticed a semi truck to my left in my blind spot turn on her right turn signal. It seemed like a slow motion movie as she was merging into my lane. I instantly decided to get into the long open space in front of the truck because I was afraid that I wouldn't stop in time and that the truck, with it's wide birth, would clip and totally destroy the front. It was such a shock to me that I don't remember most of the event and glued together the last few seconds based on later observations of the impact to my car and from what the truck driver has told me. The truck first hit the driver's door at 25 MPH. When this happened the window exploded into tiny fragments and she knocked off the side mirror. But it seems that she stopped and I was accelerating so that the truck scraped the left side of the Saturn. My bumper was caught and I spun out in front of the truck doing a 270 into the opposing lane. Lucky for me I didn't have a scratch on me and didn't hit the ongoing traffic. The roads were caked with snow and I'm hoping that because of the slipperiness the frame and/or suspension weren't damaged.

I bought an SL1 and was wondering if I can put 15" wheels on it. The tires on the '95 are brand new winter tires. Do SL1s run well on 15s?

Good to hear that you are OK! Don't you just love those safe Saturns.

Yes you can run 15's on an SL1. Your excelleration will not be quite as good. Also your speedo/odometer will be a little bit off, just a little.

Crazy story.

15's (alloy) came on my SC1 from the factory so should be 100% fine with your SL1.

The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

The fiberglass panels are AWESOME! The crazy part is that even though the huge truck nailed the door and the glass shattered the power lock still works! The door is NOT bent at all and opens & closes just fine. Also the outer door panel popped back out and there's only a scrape where the truck contacted the car. The accident probably would have been worse without the layer of snow on the road.

Saturns dont have fiberglass body panels. They're plastic.

The panels are so sturdy I thought they were fiberglass. Once I scraped a concrete post at a gas station. The post was painted yellow and I had a big yellow streak on the door. The yellow paint washed off by itself in the rain and didn't leave a scratch.

Some plastic will rot after several years. For example, I've seen several plastic PC power cords that develop sticky black spots on them.

First you hit a pole at a gas station, then a semi-tractor, maybe you should park the SL1 instead of putting 15's on it.

How bad does the Saturn look? Sucks that happened to you...definitely seems like the truck driver's fault, as they were merging into your lane. I had to pull over to the side of the road once to avoid being hit by someone speeding like hell and not reading the signs.

You can put the 15's on the SL1...the SL1 will be a little slower than the SL2, but you'll get better gas mileage with it too. At least it's a 95 model, so it's 100hp, instead of the 85hp (TBI) in the previous years (91-94).

Sucks that happened to you, always sucks to hear about Saturns getting messed up, LOL.

Not too bad considering. I'd like to post some pics sometime in the future.

It happened for the best. I got some practice on a car that wasn't very expensive and no one got hurt. People are fallable, I and the truck driver were in each other's blind spots. She was nice and openly admitted to the police man that it was her fault.

I found a '92 SL1 of the same color that is in very good condition. Bought it to use as a ride while the '95 is being fixed and for body parts. I'm beginning to enjoy it more than the SL2 b/c it has more options & runs strong.

Thanks for your thoughts.
