Does anyone one know of the 07 ion 2.2 having two camshaft sensors? The manual suggests so. All I see so far is the camshaft position sensor just to the right of the intake manifold and the crankshaft sensor which takes either removal of the intake manifold or removing the starter and working from underneath. Is there a 2nd camshaft sensor somewhere?

To clarify, you meant 07-08? And if so, why does it mention a second one in the Hanes manual? Here's a pic. I need to double check, well in my case this would be like the 5th time. I think the book instructs to remove the fuses box under the hood to get to it. Hopefully I don't have one like you say

To prove existence of dual camshaft position sensors would be looking for wiring. If the Haynes manual is correct, search for wiring as it should reveal where the two camshaft sensors are located. And show two camshaft sensors in EFI wiring to the ecm/pcm. Theoretically, one camshaft sensor is used and a second one might interfere with dual signals unless the ecm/pcm is looking for two camshaft sensor signals at different times. To understand this would require understanding EFI systems based on the one crucial timing signal equivalent to the old mechanical distributors of yesteryears, the crankshaft position sensor.
Mechanically, distributors required alignment to the camshaft gear, meshing correctly for initial spark timing for top dead center to cylinder #1 with springs and counterweights adjusting advanced timing as engine rpm rises. Rotating the distributor at idle rpm with a stroboscope flashing to illuminate timing marks on the crankshaft with a fixed pointer or notch sets initial timing. Adjusting point gaps also maintains spark timing. With EFI systems doing away with mechanical distributors, electronics took over with a computerized ecm/pcm running the entire EFI system. The crank sensor is the electronic heartbeat of the ecm, relying on detecting machined or stamped steel teeth on crankshafts for mechanically setting the crankshaft timing to crank sensor fixed position, generating precise timing signals every ecm/pcm needs to run the EFI system; turning on the fuel pump, initialize timing for spark and pulse injectors. No crank sensor signals = no fuel pump, no spark and no injector pulses. All spark timing starts from crank sensor signals with programming determining spark advance and injector pulse width (on time). The camshaft sensor aids timing for greater precision. Some vehicles use crank and camshaft sensors. Using two camshaft sensors doesn't make sense and may be overkill if an engine needed two. |
