Saw an earlier thread regarding transmission problems...mine has 143k mi,was driving down the road and it just started revving. I thought I had felt some slippage a couple weeks back, but it ended up acting normal again. Now it won't go over 45 mph.
Is it too early to have trans probs with no warning? Last time this happened was with my Caprice, but that was after a hard winter. Not so this time. Taking it in to get looked at on Monday, because as usual this stuff happens on weekends. I don't think my prognosis is very good... |

Update: Mechanic said it might be a solenoid or wiring but has to look further. I have a feeling it's a gear but we'll find out...

These transmissions are very reliable. Unless the fluid has never been changed and/or the car was abused and the clutches are burned up or there's a mechanical problem.

Well I guess this trans wasn't the most reliable...they want $600 to tear it apart, not including what might be wrong. Probably better off financing another car. Far as I know the fluid didn't need to be changed, and that these newer models have a sealed trans where only dealers can check the fluid...there wasn't a stick for it.

No, not sealed. All you have to do is take off the driver's side tire and there's a drain and fill to hole. You can get a good used trans for under 1000.

The mechanic verified my thought...he said it's hard to get to and that's what will cause the $600 labor cost. They quoted me $2000 on a new trans,I know I can get them used but I've also heard second hand or rebuilds aren't as reliable as original. I had 2 trans rebuilds on my old Bronco...

A rebuild is only as good as the kit and mechanic doing it. Rebuilds can easily be as reliable as a new transmission, and can even be more reliable. These are actually very reliable transmissions, even put in heavier cars. pulling the trans is a bit involved, but no more than any other modern front wheel drive car.
