Wrench Advice! 1997 Saturn SW2

The car just recently got a new battery (for the 4th time). Now has a new alternator (2nd one so far), a new starter, a new master cylinder, and new bolts for connecting the cables into the battery. As well as a new air filter.

Just recently, for no obvious reason, the lights started going dim inside the car, then flickering, then the gauges started going haywire, the battery light was constantly flickering. The rpms went up but the car was barely getting up and going (basically like it was being pulled backwards while you are trying to go forward) shifting hard at times.

The alternator is brand new, just replaced. The battery is brand new as well. We have new spark plugs and air filter... all the fluids are at the point they need to be...

What is going on? We really don't want to sell it but we are stumped as its electrical or not? Bad ground? A short? Fuse? Relay? Sensor?

Please Help 😅😓

Are you saying this only started happening after the latest electrical work? If that's the case, there must have been a mistake made installing the new parts, ie, either wrong part or maybe something is miswired. I'd back those parts out one at a time and see if it uncovers the problem.

The automatic is very sensitive to voltage fluctuations, if the electrical is going crazy then the auto will too. Sounds like either the alternator failed or a battery cable came loose.

No, it happened before the new parts were put on. The battery was dying/not charging so we thought the alternator must have gone out again. We replaced it and the battery. Everything was fine and tested to be sure they worked properly. After we put them on the problems stopped for like 10 minutes and then they came back. Low rpms and the car barely going. The lights flickering and going dim, the battery light flickering.

If you have an electrical fault in your wiring or a bad relay, you will need to do some sleuthing with a multi-meter. Here's a link to Eric O's South Main Auto Channel. Eric does a good job showing how to approach these faults systematically before spending tons of $ with the parts canon. Use Youtube search on his page for "drain" and a bunch of diagnostic videos pop up.

Fortunately, the wiring on these cars is simpler than newer cars, so it should be easier for you. Let us know how you get on?
