Default Differences in MDRA transmissions

Question? is there enough difference in a 04 Honda transmission for a 3.5 and a 06 that it should not be used. I have a 06 with the MDRA Honda M7 that stopped moving. I had got the oil changed twice but before getting the third time done it stopped moving when I had to drive it in 0 degree weather for an emergency. I found a low mile 04 but will it work? I have read about the three shaft and four shaft difference but the two look so similar. Is there a indication in the serial number or model number to tell. I bought this VUE used and do not know the history. Oil came out real dark when I dumped it to pull the transmission. Help.
