I have finally managed to swap out the rear brakes and subframe. My 1999 SC1 now has a rear sway bar, and disk brakes. I also swapped out the parking brake cables, and brake hoses. They all work. I test drove it, and it stops, and the pedal does not pulse, but I did hear a noise coming from the PR brake that sounds like a bicycle wheel that is not true rubbing on rim brakes, or an old steam train chugging sound. I may want to put those rotors on a lathe.

I also got reunited with the SES light, and the codes P0172 (running rich), P0733 (gear 3 incorrect ratio), and P0340 (cam position sensor).

The problem I was having with my engine running rich was caused by me replacing bad fuel injectors with more bad fuel injectors. This problem has been solved by installing fuel injectors that work correctly. They came off an SL that did not seem to have air conditioning or power steering, but I had assumed they never made 2nd gens like that. Anyway, I also replaced the front oxygen sensor, and the only problem that It still has is P0733. The transmission acts up sometimes, the RPM goes up for no reason, and this code appears a few seconds later. I do not know if emissions tests in colorado care about error codes related to the transmission, but there is only one way to find out. I will have it tested at the next oprotunity.

I am finally selling the parts off of my 2001, there are pictures in this thread. http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=270563
Also, I seem to have lost the title to my 1999, the only proof that we own that car, and my dad might eventually figure out how to get that problem solved, by harassing people at the DMV, what fun!

I came out to work on my 1999 SC1 yesterday, and was greeted by a lake in the driver side footwell. I spent the rest of the day scooping water out with a cup, and sucking more water out with a syringe. I knew that the water came from the sunroof. I tried blowing compressed air through the drain hoses, but they were already clear. The actual drain holes are TINY, and are easily overwhelmed when water POURS into the sunroof, causing the rail to overflow. They seem to drain more effectively when the vehicle is level, so I put the front wheels on ramps, and it worked! (Catalytic converter thieves please stay away!)

[QUOTE=lanxer57;2372904I tried blowing compressed air through the drain hoses, but they were already clear. [/QUOTE]

You sure that some of the drain hoses haven't become detached from the sunroof drain nipple? They are clipped in and sometimes blowing compressed air will shoot them off the nipple on the drain rail. If it has been worked on before is it possible the clips were not re-installed. It's also possible the line has cracked.

I've never had a sunroof leak like that no matter how severe the rain is. There are 4 drains; one on each corner. When you put water in the drain pan do you see water coming out under the car behind the front tires and near the rear tires (4 spots)? If you don't this may give you a clue as to which line has an issue.

It's also possible that the water is coming from the HVAC fresh air intake (see pic below). If the oval seal with the screen is gone of failed; water will drain into your HVAC system and onto your floor. Also, check the 2 holes mentioned by OldNuc in this quote.....
Quote:
There are 2 circular depressions up on the cowl in the same panel as the oval air intake, one on each side. They are about 1-1 1/4" in diameter and have an elongated hole in the center. These should have a piece of rectangular mastic material sealing these holes and if not you will get wet.
and the AC drain mentioned in this quote...

Quote:
The other possibility would be the HVAC drain on the firewall is clogged. The A/C evaporator within the HVAC behind the dash has a drain that exits through the firewall. This allows any condensation from the evaporator to drip down and exit the interior and drip onto the ground. You can use a pen or pencil to poke into the drain and unclog it. You'd need to access it from under the car.

It may be leaking through those, but if it is, than it is also leaking from the sunroof, because the headliner was also still damp, and stained from the water. I also tested this multiple times with a garden hose gently pouring water on the sunroof. This test is also how I figured out that it drains better when level. The drain tubes at the back probably add to this. It does not overflow when level, but a "sucking" sound can be heard as the water drains out the tubes. (which are attached, I pulled them off to blow air in them, but never saw any clips on the 1999, or 2001) Also, the water leaking in the sunroof from a garden hose looks like a waterfall on the passenger side, maybe that has something to do with the problem.

My car battery ran low while driving a few days ago, and it died idling in the driveway yesterday. When this happens, the transmission starts slipping, the radio shuts off, gauges fail intermittently, the engine idles rough, and eventually stalls. This was caused by the alternator failing, and I replaced it today with the alternator off my 2001. This is the dirtiest alternator that I have ever seen, caked in grease, and with pieces of debris inside the housing. This is what I believe caused it to fail, and most of the debris in the alternator seemed to come from the firewall insilation, which was disintegrating along with the hood insilation. I tore the firewall insilation apart (what was left of it), and removed the hood insilation intact. during a test drive, it did not die, and nothing caught fire. I am not worried about heat damage to the paint, it is in poor condition anyway.

My 1999 SC1 has finally passed emissions testing, and been registered. I have put license plates on it, as well as the SCCNA sticker from Dummos holiday contest (try and spot it), and a new set of windshield wipers. I am still working on the automatic transmission http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...=270413&page=2(no, I am not swapping it with a manual), and I have also noticed that there is about 2-3 inches of play in the steering wheel, accompanied by a clunk at the point where the wheels actually begin to turn, and when the vehicle goes over bumps. The wheels seem to be connected with each other when pushed with the vehicle on jack stands, but the steering wheel still seems loose under those conditions. I suspect the rack/pinion more than the tie rods.

I replaced the 1999 auto transmission with the auto from the 2001 that I crashed, it is now functioning in all gears, I also replaced the steering rack, taking out most of the play. The clock spring is not broken, but the wires that connect it to the horn, cruise control, and airbag have somehow been ripped out of it, so I need to get one. I have pulled the fuse for the airbags, fearing that it might randomly explode while driving. It is also showing an error code for insufficient flow through the EGR.

I replaced the clock spring yesterday. The 1999 air bag connectors have a slightly different design than the one that appears on 1995-1998 s series, so finding one that fits was difficult, but steering wheels without cruise control have the same clock spring with the same wires and connectors as ones with cruise control, except the cruise control connector is unused. I also changed out the EGR valve, the horn and cruise control now work, the SES light is off, and after I put the airbag fuse back, that light turned off as well. The vehicle now seems to be displaying the symptoms known as "reverse slam" less than 500 miles AFTER changing the transmission fluid and filter immediately after replacing the entire transmission. I wonder if the air compressor could unclog some of those passages...

I filled the fuel tank with 5.757 gallons of 85 octane on 8/9 after 153 miles, calculating 26.5809589993 MPG.
My sister filled it with an estimated 10.55 gallons of 85 octane yesterday after an estimated 267 miles (having neither recorded the ODO, or exact quantity of fuel, estimated by the amount paid in cash, but potentially having filled it all the way, and having no receipt), calculated as an estimated 25.308056872 MPG.
This fuel economy must improve, any ideas?

Look at my SC1, Do you notice anything different? One of the wheels is different. I came home last week with a driver seat for the saturn, only to find that it had a flat tire, and the pf rim had been scratched (it was unusually shiny). After trying to fill it, I noticed that it was quickly leaking out. I put the rear tires in the front, put the "donut" on the dr side, and the df tire on the pr side. I went to the junkyard on the next day, and found that the 1993 SL2 with the "sawtooth" wheels had been sent to the crusher before the yard opened in the morning. I looked everywhere else for ANY alloys that would fit, got 4 steelys in pairs off a couple of SL1s, and eventually found a 15 inch alloy that fit just laying on the ground near a 1995 SL2. I bought that along with the steelys, and put it in place of the donut, and the steelys in the trunk. They are now stacked in the backyard for the next time my sister hits a curb hard enough to do that kind of damage.

I practiced ways to avoid running into other cars today, as well as how to turn around when in a hurry. Although my mother does not think it is possible, I now know that it is possible, and in fact safe for an S series to swerve around something at 55 MPH, and likely much faster on paved roads, and that it is a bit less safe, but still doable on dirt. My rear disk brakes from the junk yard are also perfectly safe without ABS, the car keeps going straight forward after the wheels lock (unless you were steering while braking, which is not safe anyway). I tested the theory that my 1st car, a 1997 mustang could have avoided a collision by going off the road, and the SC1, a car of similar size, seems to do fine on flat ground with small shrubs at 20 MPH. I did not test this at higher speeds, out of concern for the bumper cover. I also tested the movie myth of quickly rotating a car 180 degrees, and going the other way by pulling the parking brake. This actually works. I needed to pull my weak parking brake somewhat hard to lock the rear wheels (disk parking brakes), but drums might have an easier time doing this. This seems most effective at about 30 MPH on asphalt, and 25 MPH on dirt (on roads near the town Benett, east of Denver). This vehicle is also capable of making right turns at up to 25 MPH. Keep in mind that my tires are 2 years old, and begining to dry rot. I also was only doing this in the middle of nowhere, with on one in sight.
