Default 2001 sl2 exhaust options

Hey everyone, so im wanting to replace the exhaust on my 2001 sl2. Ive done pretty much everything else as far as maintanance goes. Exhaust is in place and structurally sound but when I shake the muffler I can hear some rattling. Not sure if pieces of the cat may have found its way to the muffler or muffler insides are breaking down. Either way im sure the flow may be affected a little. Car has 211k miles. Is it easiest to replace the whole exhaust from the manifold back? Im not looking for anything performance. Same size as stock whatever that is, maybe 2 1/4"? Don't mind running an aftermarket cat if its part of a full system. Ill just sell the oem cat with how much some of them go for these days. Dont have emissions to pass where I am. Or maybe just a muffler swap for the time being. Any go to options for a budget system or just a muffler? Not sure what the common parts to run on these as im new to saturn. Figured id let the old girl breathe a little better lol. Thanks!.

Thinking something like this would be sufficient. I know it will rust just the same as the current stock exhaust but doubt ill have the car long enough before it falls apart lol. Catback system ready to bolt in.

That's worse than OEM as it's aluminized steel. In the salt belt, it would last 2-3 years. The OEM setup was T409 stainless.

If it's not loud, and if your fuel economy is ok , I'd leave it.

Its not loud by any means. No leaks of any kind. Car just passed inspection recently and I've owned it for a couple weeks now. Just ran through the first full tank of fuel and calculated mileage at 31.67mpg mixed id say 65/35 highway to city. Were these rated at roughly 33.5 combined new? So not bad fuel economy. But not sure what material is sitting in the muffler rattling when I shake it. But guess I could leave it and worry if mileage goes down.

I'm in MA so do deal with salt. But have run aluminized systems on several cars in the past without issue. Usually don't keep a car longer than a couple years anyway. Whatevers on now is plenty rusted but does appear to be original.

I'd definitely leave it. The original EPA MPG ratings were before alcohol in the gas.

So is 31.5mpg combined acceptable? Ive read of people claiming to get 40 which makes my mpg look bad lol. Im sure all highway id be mid to upper 30's. But ill leave it for now until something officially clogs up.

If you can do a long drive at 55 with no stops, you can probably get close to 40 MPG. At today's highway speeds, or around town, 31.5 is good/nominal.

Okay cool. Only other thing I'm wanting to address is a service engine light for p0446. Scanned at autozone and was told evap vent solenoid but guess it could be a few things. Pretty common on these from what im seeing. Doubt its affecting anything but you wouldnt happen to have any suggestions of what to look for?

Check your heat shield that is just before the muffler at the rear. Mine has had the rivets come completely off and it sounds like an aluminum roaster pan clunking around under the car. I'm waiting on mine because I eventually want to redo my exhaust too, but I have to "unweld" the flex pipe up front from the manifold, ugh...

After taking another peek at the exhaust it looks like its been replaced/modified at somepoint as the entire exhaust is welded together. No flange where the cat back meets the cat. It doesn't look hacked together so whoever welded it was thorough. But makes for a harder replacement when the time does come. Would have to cut somewhere and have a flange welded to replicate what the stock setup would have been. But for now I'll leave it until something happens or a new engine light comes on aside from the 0446 thats currently present for whatever reason.

Yeah, whoever worked on mine before I bought it must been in the "I have a friend that can do it cheaper" category because not only do the welds look like crap, but you can see the wires left over that are stuck IN the welds.
