2008 Vue only blows cold air

We have a 2008 Vue XE with about 44,000 miles on it. The automatic climate control system has worked fine up until the time I turned the right-hand control to the "defrost" position to clear the windshield on a foggy, rainy day. The outside temperature at the time was about 55F. We noticed that the temperature in the vehicle started to get quite cold, so we turned up the temperature control. The fan speed increased, but the interior temperature just got colder. Now, the only location that air will come out is from the dash vents. Turning up the temperature only increases the fan speed, but the temperature stays cold (or gets even colder). Turning the right hand control off "auto" to the other air control modes has no effect; the air only comes out of the dash vents. Again, up until this event, the system worked just fine. Has anyone seen this problem and fixed it?

thermostat??? is engine coolant getting warm?

I believe that the thermostat is working properly. What is the best way to tell?

temperature gauge. if it goes up to where it should its working

Believe it or not, I pressed the "AC" and "recirc" buttons simultaneously and the system started to work again. Has anyone seen this one before?

AC+recirc = (hidden) reset of the climate control head?

I wonder if it is. The LED on the recirc button flashed several times after I pressed it and the AC buttons simultaneously. I thought I read at one time that pressing these two buttons would update the temperature display on the instrument panel; I'm not sure if any other functions are performed.
