Any motor 95-02 would work. The fuel rail & injectors have to be carried over and other minor swaps perhaps like the knock sensor. My SL2 is a 98 automatic.

The heads are not the same after 2000. The exhaust and intake manifolds are different.

Where are you located?

The fuel rail also changes in '98 from the return style in '97 with a $5 fuel filter option to returnless with a $50+ filter in '98. Not sure if the rails will swap '96-'99, but whatever years I tried had the mounting boss's in different locations on the intake (only had '93-97's).
Just something to check while the engines are out of the car, easier to swap the IM while it's out if it's required (and could probably have it walnut blasted to clean the carbon/oil out).

In mid 1998 the production was changed. Head, manifolds are different.

Appreciate the responses! The heads are different in later years but it does not matter, what is important is to use the original fuel rail/injectors. The exhaust manifold on my 98 will bolt on to any of the blocks. I did this with my 97 SOHC and swapped in a 02 SOHC.

The DOHC heads change in '99. They still use the '91-'98 style intake manifold flange but use the '00-'02 style exhaust manifold flange.

According to parts listings the aluminum intake is compatible from 1995 through 1999. The plastic intake 2000 through 2002. Not sure what the difference is that would make it incompatible.

Why not getting it from a junk yard?
