I have a 1997 Saturn SC1.
I am looking for a: - Remanufactured engine: 1.9L SOHC - Rebuilt transmission: automatic - Subframe and control arms Does anyone have any they are selling? Does anyone have recommendations where I can purchase these? Can you recommend a shop in the Chicago area to fix my car? Yes, I understand the repairs will not be cheap. But I love my Saturn, I am the original owner, and I want to fix it. I would be so, so grateful for the help. |

OldNuc used to suggest deal with a good machine shop, or the outfit
that rebuilds industrial engines (chippers, backhoes, etc) ... but you may need a mechanic to do the R&R, and 'normal' mechanical work. It would be useful to check for oil leaks in the head (& maybe a compression test) before tearing out/down the engine. In my area (L.I., NY) we have a couple/many rebuilders/machinists about. Figure $2000-$4000 and several weeks downtime for an engine. Used car prices have peaked, and will likely subside over the next couple years. Parts are becoming difficult to find. .......... I recently inquired about having a TAAT remanufactured/rebuilt. Two experienced pros were standoffish -- they were hesitant, since parts have become difficult/unavailable to find. They also said the TAAT is a PAIN to work on. One said figure $2500 for rebuilt TAAT, the other said Very Expensive (car not worth it). The input shaft nuts are no longer available, for example. There are still some used TAAT with less than 100kMi on car-part.com , condition likely unknown. Controlling arms, tie rod ends, stabilizer bars are yet available new (as are wheel bearings/hubs & axles). Subframes (powertrain cradles) are available in good condition -- sourced from 'southern' wrecking yards. I bought one from a boneyard here on L.I., for $250. There was No Rust. It must have come from SouthEast -- Georgia or Carolinas -- because it was full of the sort of dust that regions with CLAY soil have. It came With the stabilizer bar(swaybar) and control arms attached. The stabilizer bar was in good (rustfree) condition, so it and the subframe got painted. The control arms were marked 'T' in crayon ... TRW after inspection. But there was some play in the ball joints, thanks to there being No Grease inside. Last edited by TomM96; 01-24-2023 at 08:28 PM. Why do you think the engine needs rebuilt, verses repaired? How many miles on the car? Maybe you could repair it?
...
2002 SL1 5 speed - 165,xxx - Current daily 1993 SC2 5 speed - 200k - Unfortunately sold 2002 Silverado Z71 - 185,xxx 2007 Impala 3.5L - 365,xxx - Still running good, daily backup |
