Default Trying to adjust Saturn branded crossbars

Hi. We have a 98 SL2 with factory-branded crossbars. We want to move one of the bars on the hood to be able to mount a roof rack. I noticed that the crossbars also have a lock as well. We don't have a key for them but can get one made.

How do you move and then reattach these crossbars? Do we need the key, do we have to peel off some adhesive?

Thanks for your help.

What are crossbars?

Where are they?

What do they do?

How about a picture?

As for the cross bar, I am confused as to what this is. The description is does not resemble anything I'd seen on an SL2 in my experience. I'm reasonably sure that the use of the word "hood" was in error.

The Saturn branded roof racks are more common than the SL3, but not by much.

Not sure how you plan on moving the crossbars when they're lockable and in the locked position...that's the point of the lock. So you can't move it. Get a key that works, then you can unlock it and release the tension that holds them in place to move or even remove them entirely.

Thanks for your response. From an image search, these are the products that most resemble what we have on our car:

I have the exact same Saturn factory roof rack. The keys lock the rack from being removed. Once unlocked, each can be turned CCW to loosen the screw drive adjusting the clips to right/left roof lips. CW to tighten, CCW to loosen until the clips clear for rack removal.

The keys are double sided but my guess is only one side is used to match the pin tumblers on basic locks. If keys are available, use 'em. An amateur may be able to unlock it otherwise a locksmith can.

Thank you! This is great information. We just need a new key made, but we'll be able to use this rack basket for our car before moving up to Alaska.
