Default Sun Roof and Moon Roof

I'm browsing the internet to purchase a used Saturn. What is the difference between a sun roof and a moon roof? Does one tend to leak more than the other?

A sunroof is generally an aftermarket add on and is a fixed piece of glass that both pops straight up and can be removed manually.

A moonroof is a power operated piece of glass that either disappears into the body or slides back on top of the roof to open.

Many use the term sunroof and moonroof to mean the same thing, but they are very different indeed. I've had both, no leak problems with either one.

All moonroofs are sunroofs, but not all sunroofs are moonroof. A moonroof is a sunroof that allows light through when closed. In reality, it is just a marketing term used to differentiate some sunroofs from others. It does not matter how it opens or if it is a factory installed item.

Sunroof, moonroof, it doesn't matter what you call it, but here's what you need to know:

The Saturn factory roof has more of a tendancy to leak than some others (even aftermarket) because of its design. There are 2 major areas to maintain to help avoid trouble, though it may still find you.

1. The roof more or less fits over a raised area when closed, with a gutter along the sides for the water to run off. These gutters have drains that carry the water to the bottom of the car and out. These drains have plastic tubing which may become clogged over time, causing rain to back up and eventually seep into the headliner, potentially ruining it. The drains may be cleared with hot water if done regularly, or with an air hose if they get stopped up.

2. The rails that the roof slides on to open are not particularly well made and can bind during operation if not lubricated, and it doesn't help that some plastic parts were used where metal would have been a better idea. The motor can fail because of the stress and Saturn will be happy to fix the roof for $1200, or you can order parts through the "Sunroof Doctor".

For an example of a very good aftermarket roof with a different design, see my gallery. Both my current RL and my last SC-2 have a Webasto roof. Neither has given me any issues - ever.

Hope this helps.
