any obvious pitfalls to watch out for I read something about the VTI CVT trannys being bad to middling but I am pretty sure they stopped making them by 2005

Make sure the A/C and radiator cooling fan work. The AC compressor and cooling fan motors commonly fail. Listen for clunks from the front end (lower control arm bushings) and rear end (rear axle bushings) during the test drive. If it has a sunroof, look for water stains in the headliner.

made a deal I couldn't refuse does have P0411 code which is likely from the blown gasket between the cat and the resonator, fixed the leak and cleared the codes fingers crossed

no bad sounds from the suspension yet rad fans and ac seem to work ok(a bit whiney but it hasn't been driven in 6 months
139k on the clock and runs strong plenty of get up and go

edit: I didn't realize until I ran the vin that its a ion 3

I doubt that gasket will fix it. DTC P0411 is usually caused by an issue related to the secondary AIR injection pump, check valve, or related plumbing. I've linked a corresponding parts diagram here.

so far so good it passed the air injection test this morning after a cold start
taking it for its sticker tomarrow
I did pull the fuse out and clean it it wasn't to bad it was a little brown on the contacts fuse its self tested good, mabey that was just enough ?
it had been 730 something miles since its last code clear as well so might have picked up some gunk or like you said sticky check ball or a bad relay just happy to get it though

still fighting a large evap leak and air injection code
I can hear the air pump running its excessively loud so I think its got a leak someware
the the vapor line looks pretty crusty so thats where I am going to start for the evap problem

being a PZEV car in ny has its perks ill take it up to the dealer and let them sort out the emissions bs
