hmm, my SL1 does that when it's really cold for like the first mile or so that I drive.

I am not a tech, but I did experience a whining similar to what you're describing. See if you can pinpoint the noise with the hood up and rev the engine some. On my 97 SL, the bearing in the alternantor was whining, and it was obvious as soon as I threw the hood up. I Replaced the alternator and the whining stopped.
Hope yours is as simple!

Could also be the power steering pump. Even with fluid level OK, it will occasionally whine under cold conditions.

I'm not a tech either but my money would be on the alternator too. How many miles are on your SL2?

Wow, that's really low mileage! My alternator went out at around 80,000 miles on my '93 SL2, so maybe it's something else that's making the noise in your car.

A high pitched whine can be the first indication of an alt going bad. Ususally what happens is that the diodes start to go and the alt doesn't charge properly and makes the noise.

I guess I'm busted. Thought I'd slip a Paxton Super Charger under the hood without you knowing about it:

My SC2 was making a whining noise last night, and the auto tranny was really shifting badly. Based on advice from wolfman I had already suspected the alternator for the tranny problem. Hopefully I can kill two birds with one stone.
If this is the sign of an alternator going bad, how long before the alternator goes kaput? And when I visited a Schuck's store recently, they quoted me $125 for an alternator with lifetime warranty, $75 for one with a three-year warranty. Are those good prices?
What sucks is my alternator went out middle of last March at 64 or 65K. I just turned 78K yesterday when I heard the noises.

Saturn owner no longer as of 12/21/05, sold my SC2.
