Default 1999 SC2 1999 SC2 Manifold replacement

Any instructions or Rick Pin Video's on removing and replacing the manifold with a CA precat for my Saturn. I want to try and do this myslef but wanted to see if there was any guidance on what to do as well as the car has A/C, so have to move that out of the way. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Wrench Re: 1999 SC2 1999 SC2 Manifold replacement

If no video, how about some verbal instruction. Is it as simple as removing the 8 or so bolts, undo the A/C bolts and undo the exhaust flange to front pipe? Appreciate any input that anyone here can offer. Is there anything I need to watch out for or any tips. I have decided to just replace the bad one with a new one costing about $580, so just looking for any information before removing bad manifold with precat.

Yes, it is as simple as you describe. The only step I see missing is to disconnect the wiring to the front O2 sensor if it is in the pre CAT like on my '02.

You may want to consider unbolting the down pipe from the motor-tranny support bracket. Getting the manifold to line up with the three down-pipe studs and all the head studs might be challenging without the added flexibility.

Good point on the downtube support - forgot that one. Also, you have to remove the serpentine belt to move the a/c compressor, and be careful not to kink the a/c hoses when moving it out of the way. On an SC1, it can be moved to the radiator support with no problem.

I wanted to know if there was a Rich Pin video on A/C compressor removal as well as the serpentine belt? I removed the front pipe from the manifold underneath the Car and removed the Radiator fan and other couple things for easier access. Now need to remove or move the A/C and serpentine belt but could not find any video. Just don't want to remove more than I have to to be able to remove the manifold. One weird thing is I can see the bottom screen of the pre-cat and looks clean as can be. I would have thought if pre-cat is clogged would see remnents of some sort on the lower screen. Any thoughts?

Appreciate a link for the video if it exists.

This is such a great forum that it goves me confidence to work on my wifes Saturn and after watching the videos, almost look forward to doing the work.....LOL.

Thanks again everyone!

I figured out the Serpentine belt. Now would appreciate any help on A/C compressor removal. Thanks

Should be 3 13mm bolts, 2 are freaking annoying as well as sorta hidden. There might be 2-3 10mm bolts too, only 3 hold the compressor to the bracket and the rest hold the bracket to the head.
Then there's the 4 10mm bolts holding the bracket (front of manifold) to the head.

You'll want a decent length of a breaker bar, they always stick really really good for me, but I've never snapped one off.
...
The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a manual

Thumbs Up Re: 1999 SC2 1999 SC2 Manifold replacement

Success. Was able to figure out A/C removal and once that out of way was a piece of cake. So before ordering the new manifold with pre-cat for $580, I punched out the old cat from the manifold and looked thru the honeycomb/mesh and I could see thru every hole. But put manifold on minus pre-cat and went for ride. Car runs great and the jerking and hesitation issue is gone. Can anyone explain why if the mesh honeycomb is clear why would the cat be clogged? Seems strange to me.

Thanks to all on this forum for the helpful hints and advice.
