Default Top Speed

Ok, I know that my SC2 tops out at like 124.. how do I change that? Can it be done for a decent price? I know that I'll want some higher rated tires on before that is done.. but I just want to know that it is possible..

i don't need to.. but hell, it would be fun! that way when i go to the track i would be able to still race with some of the faster cars that aren't in my class.

Track speed is all about managing the curves.

Even at Summit Point raceway, the real race cars hit 160 on the 2700 foot straightaway.

A stock Saturn isn't gonna get anywhere near there and survive the turn at the end.

Dial in that suspension first. Get some HP second, and then you can try pushing the top speed.

Track day is a blast though! I'd love to do it. Tooo chicken.

I have to agree with Doug, why do you need to go faster than 124. I start getting nervous in street cars at 120, not because of the car, but other people in other cars...and cops...can't forget them.

If you want street/curve speed, fix/dial in the suspension (SPS has a kit for that) and dial in brakes (suggest getting appropriately sized discs and pads and steel lines) and go to driving school to learn to drive.

If you want 1/4 mile time...odds are you won't get there any faster with a higher top speed until you can get you takeoff and acceleration fixed. And that is more a matter of horsepower, weight and traction.

So to beg the question, why do you need more?

well, i have been to driving school.. i got to drive some Saleen's and i guess i'm just one of those guys where there is no such thing as enough. i am safe on the roads, but i want to be able to go as fast as i can. i don't want to sit there and think, could i have went faster if i didn't have that darn limiter?

.........and don't forget to check the speed rating on your tires.

nope. nada. no. the pcm cuts off the fuel when you attempt to go faster than 124mph. you could get an aftermarket setup like an electromotive tec-ii to run the engine and remove the stock pcm, but that would cost about $1200 or so. or you could locate a gm/saturn engineer that could remove the limiter from the pcm, but that's a slim to none chance. believe me i've asked...

jesus christ you ******* sound like my mother... ooohhh that's too fast slow down... why do you want to go that fast.... because it's a RUSH... why the hell not? you only live once... it's not like i'd like to get rid of the govenor so that i can do over 124 every place i go just for that once or twice you decide you'd like to try and top it out, or to see if that new mod added anything to your top speed. yes good suspension is always a good mod but gimmie a break...

Haaa!

Ever worked in an ER?
On a rescue squad?

I have seen too many young dead guys.

Everybody thinks they are safe, they don't make mistakes, that they know what they're doing.

The public roads are not for play.

A year ago, TWO cyclists were smashed flat when a speeding driver thought he was on a deserted road.

Take it to the Track! It's much faster there anyway.

Mustang46L,
While I seriously doubt you'd ever reach the 124mph limter on-track, I'm sure you'll probably have the most fun of your life driving your car in a SAFE, CONTROLLED environment. It's really nice not having to worry about wild animals (other than fans), cops, and other distractions when thrashing your car.

Again concerning not hitting the limiter on-track, my friend went up to Brainerd International Raceway here in Minnesota last fall in his 94 SC2. It has the longest front straight in the US (about 6000') with turn #1 you take basically flat-out. I think he said he hit 115 or so by the time he made the first turn and that was with a set of race rubber, entering the turn onto the straight at 80mph. Unless you plan on running a turbo or S/C (nitrous isn't allowed on most road courses), I'd seriously doubt you'd hit the limiter. Not that you won't be having the time of your life, though... I thoroughly enjoy driving at Gingerman Raceway even though I don't get above 85 on the main straights. That track is made for Saturns and it's fairly easy to sneak up on unsuspecting "faster" cars that can't handle.

Well, I guess I got to rambling a bit...

ok, well i have an old airport out here in bumble****, pa which is about 3 1/2 miles of bare track.. i think i can hit 124 there.. and i'm allowed to be there.. as my uncle owns the property.. so if i wanted to take my car past 124 i could very easily... BUT I STILL DON'T KNOW HOW!!!

If you can adapt this to your car you'll no longer have a top end limiter. Your speedometer will register less than 125mph but there is a seperate speedometer on this device to let you know how fast you are really going.

Adapting shouldn't be too hard, you'll just have to be creative.

Abe.

Wow!

An old airport runway.. .. That would be very cool.

You should really set up some cones and nail your suspension down.

You've basically got free track time. You could do well in SCCA competitions.

I guess you could disconnect the speedo connections. Better yet, get the Factoty Service Manual diagrams. These will show you how the PCM gets the spped information.

Be careful, at those speeds you're more an airplane than a car. Your car isn't designed to live either well or long at those speeds.

This thread brings to mind one of the old "Burma Shave"signs that used to be posted along the highways many years ago.
