Default Sudden Onset Soft Clutch Pedal

2000 Saturn SL, I can't part with. I barely drive the car 1000 miles a year. Suddenly clutch feel light as a feather. Still functions. No apparent leaks at Master cylinder area. Oil level is good. I'm unable physically to tackle clutch replacement, so I'm hoping to hear someone tell me its worth it to replace the slave/master cylinder assembly? I'm not much for parts replacement as a method of troubleshooting, hence looking for some input.

There is an access hole near the slave cylinder where a wire can be used to measure the extension of the slave. If you search the forum for soemthing like clutch wire test it will give the details.

I wondering what "still functions" means. Does it shift smoothly and easily into all forward gears, both up and down shifts; both engine off and on? Does the clutch slip when making a hard shift up into 5th? (This is easiest to detect taking the engine rpm up into the 4000-5000 range, 3rd gear, then shifting to 5th with full throttle being applied right as clutch is engaged for 5th).

That "wire test" is great for determining if the hydraulics are functioning OK, so do it first; but I am suspecting the diaphragm spring in the clutch cracked and you will find the clutch is slipping

Still functioning means the car shifts through all gears smoothly up and down, off and on. The pedal just seems to have lost seems to have for lack of better words lost resistance. It springs back fine, it just feels way to easy to depress.

Try a few hard 3-5 shifts, see if it slips.

Could be a failing pressure plate spring. Never heard of that in the S Series before.

First, I want to thank all of you for your replies. Now, you will have to forgive my ignorance. What do you mean by try a hard shift?

Pretend to be a drag racer. If the pressure plate spring is failing, the clutch will slip more easily.

Just an Update, Replaced the Clutch master/slave cylinder as one unit. Was not too bad of a job. Battery tray bolts rusted out was the only glitch. Clutch feels no different so I guess I'm looking at a failing pressure plate. No way I can do that job. Thanks for all the input.
