Default 2002 2.2 Ecotec timing Question

I have a 2.2 Ecotec that the timing chain broke on. I did not note the crank position before pulling the balance shaft chain to replace it. How do I determine if the #1 piston is at TDC on the correct stroke to install the timing chain and balance shaft chain?

It is easy to determine after you replace all the bent valves.

hi sages - regarding the bent valves resulting from a busted timing chain in the 2.2 L 4 cyl engine wouldnt the short cut remedy be to replace the wrecked head with a used or rebuilt complete cylinder head? also wouldnt giving the job to a dealer or even an indy be an invitation to the cleaners? bet that job would cost $1k. remember there are people who will pat you on the back with one hand and pick your pocket with the other. maybe i need attitude readjustment hour. thanks tons bob f
