Trying to identify the hoses on the L300 power steering assembly, seems there are variations when I search for parts....going to replace the pump and want to replace all the hoses at the same time.
Any help appreciated. Cheers ! |

I looked on RockAuto and it does not look confusing. What year is your Saturn L300? If you have a 2004 you need to determine which engine you have other than that it is pretty straight forward.

Thanks.......located one elsewhere.....trying to see if there is a power steering pressure switch in the system and where it is located....none shows up in power steering or senders/sensors....

Thank You...I hope we are both right.....I had a stall issue after my p/s went out...some vehicles will react this way to loss of p/s pressure...figure my idle air control coughed...
Always something......lol... |

Are you troubleshooting an engine stalling problem or loss of power steering?

It would be the later now....p/s failure happened before the stall....replacing hoses and pump...found a busted hose, car is old..not a surprise)...resulting failure might have caused pulley drag....either way codes came for stall as low rpm idle air, lean bank 1 and 2...starts and immediately stalls...sudden onset after p/s went out...btw squealing stopped after top off, and then failure after about 10 mins with bad hose leak...prob on pressure side...
Hoping after replacing p/s pump and hoses, things might be different before I approach the reason for sudden stalling |

Not an expert on power steering but there has never been a report within these forums of a power steering pump failure locking up to cause an engine stall. A general search of the internet may or may not reveal pwr steering failure contributing to engine problems.
A power steering hose leak is downstream relative to either the pressurized side feeding the steering rack or return hose. On the pressure side, leaking fluid would lower pressure as the pump continues to run until loss of fluid occurs. This would lower pump loads on the engine belt drive system. A return hose leak doesn't affect pump loads until loss of fluid occurs, again lowering pump loads on the engine. In practical terms, the pump (unless mechanically jammed from unforeseen reasons) losing oil simply lowers power demand from the engine. Engine stalling, if directly related to the power steering pump, should be easily diagnosed by removing the drive belt and starting the engine for a brief run. The water pump won't run and a short engine run of less than a few minutes won't harm the engine. Manually rotating the pump by hand should result in some pressure against turning as the pump develops hydraulic pressure but shouldn't prevent turning. You may have two separate problems - the hose damage and as yet undiagnosed problem of engine starting/stalling. |
