Question 1999 SL1 Clutch issue?


Long time reader, first time posting, such a wealth of info that I have never needed too, aloha all Saturnfans...

I just replaced the pressure plate, disc, throw-out bearing and a new hydraulics system, following the great notes from Cris Thomas.. But, now it will shift into any gear (havent checked 5th or reverse) without the clutch and the wheels engage(it is still on jacks). The clutch pedal and hydraulics seem to be working fine.

At a loss as to what is wrong or to fix?

1-You mistakenly posted in the L-series forums and you have an S-series car. Either let this thread die and simply post a new thread in the S-series Tech forums or pm the Admin and wait for a reply. Its just easier to let this thread die.

2-As to your clutch repairs and still on jacks, you may be distracted by the wheels turning and presuming something wrong. Drop the front end where the wheels make contact with ground and try everything again. If your repairs went fine and nothing was left out, the wheels need to be on the ground for amy meaningful tests otherwise you're probably seeing parasitic drag enabling both wheels to turn while shifting with or without clutching.

Its not discussed at length about manual xmissions but the gear case still turns from frictional drag; the heavy lubricant and input drive shaft still turns with or without gear engagement. In neutral, no gears are engaged but the drive shaft still turns. Without wheels touching ground, the lack of wheel resistance against turning allows the parasitic drag to turn both wheels. If you're careful, with wheels still off the ground, place a foot against one wheel to stop it from turning - you should be able to stop it as the xmission is in neutral. The other wheel may or may not turn and you can probably have another person stop that wheel from turning too. This is what should occur as the drive wheels are on the ground with the engine idling and xmission in neutral. The weight of the car won't allow the xmission to move the car in neutral. If the new clutch parts are installed correctly and normal clutch pedal is applied with the engine idling, the car shouldn't move (parking brakes released). Shifting into first should be without issues and letting out the clutch should engage xmission to engine to move the car. And so on and so forth with all the other gears.
