2003 L-Series 2.2L Sedan
2001 SL1
Default '03 L200 Wiring Question...

Wiring up this Saturn for towing and I'm having trouble seeing any way to route a bundle of wires into the cabin from the engine compartment. I'd prefer to find somewhere on the drivers side but if it's easier on the passengers side I'll take that too. It's an L200 Sedan and the wires will go back into the trunk to operate the brake/running/turn signal lights.

Anyone run a bundle of 4 wires into the cab? And where did you do that from in the engine compartment? Was a hole drilled?

Thanks!

I think I ran mine through the boot around the steering shaft. I did not go all the way to the trunk. I put the diodes near the left instrument cluster fuse panel and tied into the tail lights that run down the sill plate on that side.

This video any good? Connections are made in the trunk not at the front of the vehicle.

Not exactly...what's going on there is that it's being wired up to PULL a trailer. What I'm doing is wiring my sedan up to be TOWED by an RV, all 4 wheels on the ground.

My SL1, I did the whole ball of wax where I ran wires back to the trunk and made up my own multi-diode steering modules. The diodes were only $0.09 each but the terminals were expensive! It's easy work, and in the SL1 there's an obvious place to route the wire cable into the cabin.

With this L200, I bought a wiring kit where the owner drills a 1" hole into the rear light assy in the trunk, both sides, and installs a 'Towing Bulb' into the hole. It's a two filament so it's Running light, and Brake light. Of course you remove the tail light plastic assy to gain access to the new bulb...hopefully, it'll never burn out while I'm towing. Once those are wired up, the cable is routed to the front of the car and to make it easy and safe (not routed under the car), it's best to route the wire bundle through the firewall.

And that's where I am in the project, trying to route the wire bundle through the firewall somewhere. Spent over an hour today trying to find some easy way to do it, I'm thinking of drilling a hole below where the accelerator cable goes.

I think those company making those tow options would also know the wiring setup to do that as well. You should check with them to be sure as if they make those front towing rack they would have more experience with this setup.

This can be done when towing a vehicle with a manual transmission. Your car has an automatic transmission and thus under no circumstances should you car be towed with the front wheels rolling on the ground. In such a situation the transmission will, in all likelihood, be damaged severely resulting in a transmission repair costing more than the car is worth. The use of a dolly under the front axle is adequate to deal with towing your car safely.

Doesn't apply to a '03 Saturn L200. Check your source.

Automatic transmission Saturns can be towed on all four with no problems.

I googled this question as Pierrot's advice is rarely wrong. However, it is not as clear cut as they can or they can't.

From the RVing site that discussed towing flat and the Saturn L series in particular, the answer was for the most part, yes you can to a Saturn L series flat subject to following certain procedures. Some the answers on that thread mentioned pulling two 30 amp fuses and leaving the ley in the ignition. Unfortunately and most frustratingly, all the responders who mentioned pulling two 30 amp fuses failed to mention which fuses! Several answers were 'consult your owners manual'. One common comment was that the Saturn S series (which the poster had) appears to be (or was) the darling of the RV tow flat community.

Automatic transmissions appear to fall in to 3 categories; mechanical, electronic and CVT. The latter CVT appear to be a absolute no-no for towing flat.

All this said, I think this question is really beyond the scope of this forum and belongs more accurately on an RVing site, where towing flat and the issues is going to be more a common topic.

If I'm wrong about towing an L-Series on all four wheels then so be it, and I stand corrected.

In the interests of accuracy, below are copies from GMs online owners manuals. This one came from the '04 L-series owner's manual.
