2004 VUE 3.5L
Default Clicking noise on startup. 2004 VUE 3.5 Base

Hello all.
I have an unusual clicking noise on startup for the past year or so. This only comes on a cold engine and goes away after the engine warms up. I am suspecting a worn timing belt tensioner adjuster.

I uploaded a video to youtube so the noise can be heard clearly but I cannot post the link here. If anyone is interested in having a listen, let me know I can email the link.

If it's the tensioner, would you advise just changing the adjuster only or do an entire timing belt/water pump job?

If entire job, any advise about what timing belt kits are good. The prices are from $75 all the way up to $350.

Thanks much in advance for any help.

How many miles on the current T-belt? What is making you think its the tensioner making the noise? I would think that the tensioner would have fairly minimal movement to it especially at idle. Unless you're referring to the tensioner pulley bearing as the noise maker.

Many of the kits I recently looked at included the T-belt, water pump, tensioner and pulleys. I ended up going with the Aisin TKH-002 kit. If you're going to go into it to the level of replacing the tensioner then why not go ahead and buy one of the kits and replace everything. If you replace just the tensioner and its still clicking then you have a bunch more parts to look at replacing and in essence your previous time & labor was wasted.

Thanks for the reply,

Unfortunately I do not know how many miles are on the current belt. I bought the car used and do not know if it has ever been changed, but I'm assuming at least once.

I am thinking it is the tensioner because I have come across a video on youtube that shows the problem and it sounds and acts just like mine. Also from some other research.

I sent you a PM with the links for the 2 videos I am referring to. Please take a listen and tell me what you think. I see you also are a new user and cannot post the links either...

It would be nice if some other user who is able, could add the video links to this discussion. It would be of service to others later....

Thanks,

Robert

I watched the videos and yes it seems yours matches the sound on the other video. How many miles are on your Vue now? One thing that might tell you whether or not the T-belt has been serviced or not is to take the top dust cover off of the front timing chain. Its only about a half dozen 10mm bolts and it pops right off. This will allow you to view the belt. Have someone crank the engine around and see if you can see any writing on the T-belt. My stock belt had no writing on it. It might have worn off. If for instance you see Gates, or Dayco printed on it for example it would be a good bet that the belt had been replaced. If there is no writing on the T-belt then just examine it for wear/cracking. I would say that if it had been replaced in the last 75k miles the belt should look pristine with no wear or cracking.

If there is any doubt then I'd opt to replace everything with a kit, especially if you're capable of doing the work yourself.

The vehicle is right now at 142k. My wife thinks I would be wasting money doing a repair on a vehicle with 142k. I have been telling her this is not very much for a good Honda engine like this. I think it can go easily another 120k.

Thanks for the input. I will post the video links in this discussion when I can so others can see and compare also.

I had a weird clicking noise sometimes, not all the time, when I started my 2007 vue with 3.5l engine. There was no rime or reason, it did it when hot or cold out. This noise also went away as the engine warmed up.
I just replaced my timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley, and water pump and the clicking noise went away. I am assuming that one of the pulley bearings was on the way out and was making this noise.

Not repair- general maintenance on an engine that hasn't seen a new Tbelt in many mooons.

DOn't listen to your wife.

I wanna say I got my kit for $150. It was a continental belt and some other brands, including aisin(?)... It had the water pump too along with thenpulleys and tensioner... I had a tech do it since I wasn't confident enough to do it myself

This was at 110 k miles, the belt was in OK shape and I prob could have gone longer, but I think if a component fails, like a belt breaks, then your engine is pretty much trashed.

Mine is at 140k and runs great with no issues

Good luck

Here is the video URL's that I mentioned in the original post. Hope this thread helps any others with the similar issue:

Mine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHKVFyH7rGI

Other video I found showing the problem:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yi5BbsTT9v0

Also, I wanted to mention... I don't know if this is true or not, but in a youtube video by Bundy's garage, they mention that the older design, shorter belt tensioner used on the 1999 and earlier Honda Odyssey is a much better design and more reliable. The mechanic in the video says that the older tensioner can be used interchangeably on the newer engines. Check this video out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K52_96ERln0

Can anyone vouch for this claim?

If it's true, this would be good for anyone needing to change this part.
