Default Headlights

I've long wanted to replace the dark-gray headlight assemblies on my '04 RL with those from the '05 model, since I liked the "bright" look better. I'm no fan of chrome (which is one reason I love my RL so much), but I do like headlights to look reflective... and this seems to be a bit of a design trend for new cars, to this day.

Recently, I went on a buying spree for replacement parts and found the entire headlamp assemblies for crazy cheap (I think they were like $45 a piece, but I don't recall exactly), and they even came with all the bulbs (not that I used them).

I already had the clear corners, which I'd ordered off flea-bay ages ago, and have had to superglue back together since, as have many others.

I also ordered a headlight protector kit - those clear vinyl covers that keep your lenses from getting chipped by rocks or etched by whatever nasty acidic junk happens to land on them while driving. I special ordered the kit with clear up top and yellow on the fog lights. My fog light bulbs are a "JDM yellow" which really does a much better job in foggy/rainy weather than the white bulbs the Vue comes with. Same wattage, just a different hue. I've had higher-wattage bulbs in the fogs before and while they do throw off more light, it doesn't really help in bad weather.

Since the photo gallery is dead (RIP upload browse button), I figured I'd create this thread and stash these photos here so that they're not totally lost forever, and so someone other than myself can enjoy my handywork, since the wife is pretty ambivalent about it all.

Here's a good "before" pic from last Summer when my buddy Nick came down in his newer RL. "After" pics in second post.

Here are the old and new side-by-side on the floor of the garage, just so you can see how different they look. You can't really see so well, but the plastic lenses on my now-6-year-old OEM assemblies are a bit hazed and spotty, and I've been pretty good about keeping them clean. We don't get much road salt in these parts, but I have driven to MI in the dead of winter a couple times. weeee!

I also have Silverstar turn signal bulbs, which I think are the greatest bulbs EVER... and of course the headlights are the same for the standard beams. The high-beams are the only OEM bulbs I have, I think, since they don't get used very often.

Here's the completed result, outside and in the garage with the lights on.

As you can see in the first picture there, I didn't have the lens protectors on yet. They are completely invisible up top, but give the fogs a yellow tint all the time (naturally). I thought I'd taken pictures of them after I finished, but I guess not! I'll snap some later after I get the car clean and show them. I am really pleased with how they turned out and they'll keep those new lenses looking new forever! I got the lens covers from Xpel.com. Their prices were good, customer service was great when I called and asked for a custom kit (each kit is made to order when you place your order), and the shipping was fast. Installation was relatively easy and the result is great. I recommend them.

Still love the look of the 2004/5 RL's! Got that muscle look. The all chrome headlights look much better.

My 06 RL looks good but I still think I like the old design better. Though I do like the lights on the 06 better, they illuminate much better than my 05 Vue did IMO (especially the driving lights on the lower bumper!).

Lookin' good there!

I really like the look of all clears on the Silver Vue. On other colors it doesn't make as much difference. But, whenever I see a stock Vue, that crazy orange corner lamp sticks out like a sore thumb to me now. Kinda like when I see a RL that doesn't have the bumper cover, but that's just b/c I've had mine for so long it seems "normal" to me now.

I noticed your mirrors are painted as well. Nice.

Welcome aboard! Around here that is million dollar question. They used to be sold on ebay (in both smoked and clear format) but as time went on they became harder and harder to find. They are now almost impossible to find.

Some members have looked into have new casts made but no one has had any real luck yet.
