Default ACK! Shifting Issues!

I've got a 2001 Saturn SL2 with over 153K on it. I have about a 28-mile commute into downtown Charlotte every afternoon and lately, at about the 20-mile mark, which is I-85S, coming up on the I-77S junction, I'll come up the hill towards the ramp (straight-away), give it enough gas for a 4-3 shift, and it winds up really quickly from 2000-3200RPMs or so, then slaps the daylights out of 3rd at about 3000RPM. It does this after I've hit the I-77S ramp (bears around to the left, like a counter-clockwise motion) as well, so I have to baby up the speed in 4th gear, so I can avoid it doing it again.

Once I hit the I-277 ramp (bears around the opposite direction to the right (clockwise ramp), I can jump on it back to 3rd and it actually shifts pretty well. It only does this after about 20+ miles of driving and it slipped 3rd and slapped the gear pretty badly today on the way to work.

Basically what I've seen is that after about 18-20 miles, ramps that lead around to the left make it act nuts and ramps to the right help, although the occurrences happening while I've been on a fairly straight interstate with no major turns baffles me.

On the way home at night, it's ok for a bit longer - until I make a fairly sharp left off the interstate ramp and onto a main road - it'll start up again then, then it won't do it after I make a right turn onto another secondary road.

Here's the relative work that's been done:

Upper motor mount & both dog bones have been replaced.
Tranny was flushed at 85K and the fluid level and color look fine (from a dipstick point of view) - could this still be a tranny fluid issue? Possibly TC or differential fluid issue?

TIA for any insight...

Assuming Automatic:

Last time the tranny fluid and filter were changed?? NOT flushed.

Should be every 15K or so

Yes, automatic...honestly, I would have ASSUMED (I know, I know ) they'd drop the pan and replace the freakin' filter at Meineke, but who knows. I'll have to go back and ask, since it'll still be in the records, and I know the owner a bit now.

Any other major places you'd suggest for stuff like that?

So a bad filter could be the cause after driving around for awhile like that and not within the first 15 miles or so?

The filter is on top of the transmission. Look behind the battery. If it looks new...

Saturn autotragic filters are external spin-on like an oil filter. No dropping the pan. Look for it as noted above.

Your driveway. Supposedly its easier than changing the oil. I think its about equal

Old fluid can be your issue. Ive seen a few tranny issues because this old fluid changing viscosity to much as it heats up. Change it and the filter.

Again you should be doing this every 5th oil change to prevent further tranny issues such as lose of second gear, reverse slam, lose of reverse, or all three at once.

Also replace your ECTS as it does effect tranny operations.

Videos for both are in the how-to library.

I just changed tranny fluid and filter on my 2001 sl2 and now there is a rattling noise in reverse. Never had any issues before. I used a saturn filter and valvoline max life ATF. The old fluid looked good. Anything I might have done wrong? It drives down the road and shifts fine.

Well, I just had the pan dropped and the filter changed, since a friend wasn't available to help me with it (he's helped so much at this point anyways, heheh) and the issue SEEMS to be gone - it downshifted really nicely when needed all the way to work today. I was a little leery of a flush with 153k miles on it and it seems like most of the fluid came out anyways.

Hopefully, this will continue and all I'll have to worry about is coolant leaking out of the weep hole of the water pump. I'm sure there's a write-up for that somewhere on here.

Thanks guys for the quick answers.

And video. Don't put it off too long. Think about doing the t-stat , too while you're at it.

Check your heat shield.
