2002 SL1
Default Pulley noise

I had my water pump on my 2002 SL1 replaced about a month ago and I started to notice a metallic noise coming from the engine. It sounded like something was loose. I finally located the problem. The smaller pulley just above the last pulley at the bottom of the engine has a loose (washer, bearing, ???) that is rattling against the pully wheel. I can see it rattle visually. I do not know if the bolt was not tightened enough or what. I hope someone understands what I am talking about. Well anyway, I want to know if this is something that I need to be immediately concerned about. It does not appear that the bolt is moving. Is this something I can fix myself easily or do I need to take it to a shop. Thanks for your input.

I assume you're referring to the idler pulley or the tensioner. Which one is it?

If it's the tensioner, you need to be concerned, as this could cause your belt to get too loose.

She's right about the tensioner. I pulled the wheel and covers to inspect ours, and it fell apart in my hands!

I also had the bolt for the idler back out at one point. I pulled the idler and the bearing was fine, so I just put in back in.

In either case having any pulley on the engine loose is something you should fix as soon as you can. If a pulley goes, the belt goes with it, and you're stuck.

Yeah, but some you can let slide for a while, just not the tensioner. When the tensioner starts making noise, replace it, or have a belt that's too loose and the alternator can't do it's job, as well as the water pump. As long as the idler still moves properly (even though it might be making a noise), you can go a little longer on that, since the idler really serves no purpose other than sitting there idle as something the belt wraps around to help with the routing process. Of course, if the idler is having trouble turning, then you'll have a problem because the belt won't be able to move as freely as it should.
