I saw Marty on the road in his Old Gold SW2 this morning and waved at him. He slowly recognized me and waved back. Not bad after 3 months.

Yesterday, I was driving around my neighborhood in Boston while running some errands when a young woman started waving at me. When it's not someone I know, I usually assume they're just appreciating my art car, or else they or someone they know is from Barbados and recognize the Barbados flag painted on my hood. She appeared to want to talk to me, so I rolled down my passenger window. She said that she recognized my car as a Saturn and was having a problem with her Saturn and could I look at it/help her.

Always wanting to lend a hand to a fellow Saturn owner (as well as being a sucker for a damsel in distress), I agreed. She explained to me that the starter on her 2001 SL1 quit recently and that a mechanic she knew tapped it from above and it worked. He had told her she would need a new starter and quoted her some price upwards of $300 to replace it. I told her that yes, she would be needing a new starter, but that it should cost a lot less than that. I tried to tap on the starter from above, but I'm embarrassed to say that I couldn't quite find the right spot to hit it and probably lacked a suitable tool (there was a bout a two foot length of pipe that I was using to try to get at it. It was raining and lighting wasn't good for me to see.

She was about a block and a half from the gas station where the mechanic was who hit the starter the last time. Since the weather was pretty nasty, I offered to drive her up to the garage. The mechanic said he couldn't do it right away (I was hoping to watch him do it).

Anyway, I pulled up the starter I bought from Amazon.com a year ago for $39 and suggested that she buy it. It should be no more than an hour's job to replace it (I did it in about an hour and I'm not a professional mechanic). The mechanic at the garage gave her an attitude about her providing the part. I gave her my number and left the station to finish my errands.

She texted me later and I gave her the name of my mechanic (the independent shop I go to when I can't/won't do something myself). He has always been cool about me providing my own parts and his prices have been very reasonable.

By then, it was late in the day, and she wasn't able to get a hold of him. She called me today to say that she called around and found at first a bunch of people who gave her an attitude about her part or else gave high ball prices to replace it. She finally found someone who said he'd do it for $55-65.

She has had a couple of other stories where she paid way too much for a particular repair. I told her about this site and the Saturn S-series community and how I was able to research which parts to buy (Including the aforementioned starter).

So, I directed her to this site (I don't know if she'll sign up or not) and she has my number so she can always ask where to get a particular part or if the estimate to replace it is reasonable.

^^^^ Excellent Satbassador entry, cityhawk. I am flashing lights and waving to oncoming Saturn S series cars whenever I can. I have seen a handful of very nice gen 1s lately too but I haven't been fast on the draw enough to get off a shot. As the number of these cars slowly diminish we all have to do our best to keep the faith alive.

It was, Upstate Saturn. Her starter was successfully replaced, and I pointed her to the proper air filter choice from the local advance auto parts as well as rich pin videos. She's stoked now.

I wave at Saturn drivers all the time but most of them evidently didn't get the "memo" that we are, by virue of driving an extinct car, de facto members of the same "club". As they pass (without returning the "club handshake" ... lol) I always wonder "Do those people think I'm nuts?"

Eureka!!! Yesterday while running an errand after work I spotted an oncoming gen 1 black SC2 with spoiler and gold trim striping in what looked to be well cared for condition. I reflexively gave a double flash of my headlights and followed up with the 'hello there' wave. The driver waved back! He then turned into a condominium complex within a mile from my home. Maybe he gets it? Maybe he was tricked into thinking he knew me? However with the age and nice condition of his Saturn I think he gets it and recognized another Saturn enthusiast?
Perhaps things are turning?
I'd like to think so.
I remember the days when Saturn drivers saluted one another.

I told him that I represented Saturnfans.com and asked permission to take a picture for the website. I saw the enthusiasm in his face and he really was more than happy to tell me how much he loves his third Saturn. I talked Saturn with him as much as time would allow and asked if I could take the picture with him in it. He was happy to oblige and wanted to stand where he could hide the hubcap-less rear wheel. His wagon was purchased recently for about $1,000 and currently has 17X,XXX miles on it. Marty Rogers is the name he gave me with permission to immortalize on Saturnfans.com which he sincerely seems interested in visiting. I wish I had more time to talk with him but I was already late going home and he was busy working after all. I gave him an SCCNA sticker with the warning that it's not indestructible. I hope he shows up here and joins our community of Saturn lovers. He should really fit in nicely.
I spotted Marty in his gold wagon on a two lane main drag. We were along side each other in traffic. Shouted our hellos and I asked him how his SW2 was running and he shouted back that he needs engine mounts. I told him to get them from GM because all else are crap. We went on our way when traffic moved.

I am writing this minutes later in bank drive thru.

Filling up the wife's Pacifica tonight I spotted a gold Gen1 SW2 pulling in to the pumps. I immediately thought it might be Marty from previous posts but I was pleasantly surprised to see it was sporting Connecticut Classic Car plates. I asked the driver if he was a Saturn guy and he seemed to not think I was crazy and was happy to talk. I told him a little about Saturnfans.com and mentioned the SCCNA. He agreed to pose with his 176k beauty that he got for $300.00, works on himself and just put a fresh radiator into. He even agreed to letting me post that his name is Gerald along with this picture. He pulled out a note pad and jotted down some necessary for him to show up here hopefully soon. I told him that I am Dummo here and this is the place to be for keeping his wagon alive. An anxious gas customer caused me to cut the conversation short but I have a good feeling he might show up on these pages. If I remember correctly he said his nickname will be 'nighthawk' or something like that when he does show up.

Meet Mike, owner of this 93 SL1 purchased for $600 with 40,000 miles and currently estimated to be 60,000 miles young with a non working odometer. The gold SL2 front end is thanks to a parking lot mishap, a junkyard visit and Mike's mechanical skills. We had a nice conversation covering many things Saturn including the Saturnfans website which he said he will visit and maybe even become a member. He told me that he had no idea how popular Saturns were but needed a cheap car which he became quite pleased with.

I arrived at a Connecticut licensed vehicle emissions inspection station this morning for my bi-ennial obligation. The technician came out to me as I sat in the car collecting my papers. He asked me how many miles on my SW2 and I replied 181,000. He immediately made a comment suggesting how bulletproof these cars are and that his friend has one with 500,000 miles on it. I knowingly agreed and mentioned recently meeting a 1994 SL1 owner with almost 400,000 miles clocked.
It’s nice to see these S-Series cars have been recognized by a pretty impartial source. This guy presumably sees more cars daily than most other automotive professionals for 10-15 minutes at a time and its’ safe to say he sees a good spectrum of what’s on the road. I’ll take his poitive comments toward our cars as a bit of unbiased affirmation.

You really have to watch it, helping people out....

Years ago, I was out riding my motorcycle, when I saw an 96 SC2 go by, with a broken up driver's side fender. I happened to know that I had that fender in my parts stash, so I followed the car, to see if the driver would be interested in the part. The car pulled off the main drag into a residental area, then into a driveway. I followed into the driveway.

A woman got out of the car. She' s on her cellphone.

Uh, oh.....

I can just see it.. Good guy, offering help, accused of being a stalker.........

.....

I stayed on the bike.

When she got off the phone, I explained myself - and gave her my phone number, which she wrote down.

...

I boogied, before the cops showed up.

...

A month later, she called.

One thing lead to another.

She' s been living here for 5 years.

And she hit another deer in the 96 SC2, and now I have to replace the passenger's side fender.

So watch that good Samaritan stuff..

You never know where it' ll lead.

Yup. She sold her house, and moved into mine.

But...

It's debatable who is the Satbassador....

As she bought the 96 SC2 new, and I bought the 95 SC2 used, 8 years old. ( both red, with manual tranny)

So she has been celebrating Saturnalia longer than I...

Well, it's kind of hard to beat the bikers story, but I've had fun in my Saturn. Last summer I was headed north on M52 out of Stockbridge, MI and passed a broken down Saturn. I turned around and stopped and the guy tole me hios buddy is on the way to tow him home. I continued about my business, and was on my way back, (hot day) and thought I should pick up a bottle of water. I dropped it off, and told him about our website. Last week I was in Fowlerville at the A & W for lunch and a gold SL2 pulled in. I told the owner about the ECTS, and the importance of a good thermostat. A few days before, I was in the Costco at Middlebelt and I96 in Livonia, MI getting fuel and a gold SL1 pulled up behind me. I told the lady about the website, and she told me this car had been her mothers. Now it's her daughters. Still chugging along. BTW, my SL1 started in -12F weather this morning. Turned over a little slowly, but it fired up.

So a few days ago, I was at a Wal-Mart in Sat Catharines (Welland Ave for those keeping score at home) and I spot a guy wearing a silver satin jacket with a Saturn logo on the front and Saturn written across the back. My fiancée encouraged me to talk to the guy so I did.

It turned out he was a Saturn tech from the beginning to the end, and he owned an SL2, an SC2 and an SW2 5-speed at various times. He agreed that the SL was pretty special, but I couldn't remember if he has one currently. Anyhow, sweet jacket!
