Default ION Mods

Has anyone had time to do any ION mods? I'd like to juice mine up a bit but not sure where to begin.

The only mod you need to make for the ion is this. 1) remove the coolant cap. 2) drive a redline ion under this coolant cap. 3) replace cap and now you have a supercharged ion.

Lol. I was going to suggest something similar. Remove car from wheels. Replace with Twin Cam S series. Now replace wheels.

I just got the 2003 GM Performance Parts catalog and they have two pages on parts for the 2.2 Ecotec engine; that's if you want to go all out on fixing it. Else, try anything that will fit the current Cavalier/Sunfire with the 2.2 Ecotec or go to your Saturn dealer. They have a brochure with performance parts that will go onto your ION. As for me, I am going to wait for the Redline series to come out this fall. I do not like the styling on the ION and the added HP might convince me to trade in my SC2.

Power, yes. Speed, no. The S series will spank an ion. Plus, there is aftermarket potential.

Though, I was wondering recently... The Saab 9-3 is on the same platform as the ion, correct? Is it possible to swap out the IRS from a 9-3 to an ION? That would make a big difference in the handling.

Power to weight ratio is the same on the twincam and the Ion. I've driven both, back to back. There's a difference, and there's a reason I own an Ion instead of an S-Series.

Simple. New car smell, Delta platform, and Ecotec engine.

And yeah, I know I contradicted myself in the first post. Power to weight might be the same, but torque to weight isn't.

First gen SC2 does 16.2 at LACR stock
Second gen SC2 does 16.7 stock.
Ion Sedan does 17.1 stock.
ION Quad Coupe weighs (2751lbs) almost the same, but actually more than the sedan (2692lbs). 1320 would be slower.
ION Redline actually is listed (EPA estimate) as less than both at 2590lbs. SWEET.
Stack on another 500lbs for real numbers and you are looking at a 14.9-15.4 for 1320.

A year from now the 1320 for the ION's will be in the 14's and some 13's from the potential of the motor alone with stock internals.

the day i decided to buy an ION, the dealer tried to get me to consider a 02 SC2 manual w/every option that was a bit cheaper than the ION I wanted to order.

I did the test drive. No way. The ION has a "slow spot" in first gear where it doesn't do much at all. If you ran a 02 SC2 and a 03 ION sedan both 5 speeds from 20-80mph, shifting at 4,000rpm in each, the ION would kill the SC2, even with its bigger gears.

That's a more accurate representation of everyday driving situations that most people will appreciate.

should it be a bit lighter? sure. that's one of the things the RL will take care of. but i am happy i traded that extra weight for structural rigidity, because this car is solid, by leaps and bounds, over the S series. I still have no rattles, and i've put 12K on my car already...that SC2 i tested had maybe 150 miles on it and there were notable rattles already at IDLE.

Methinks the ION Red Line is 2950 lbs., not 2590, though it would have done wonders for its power/weight ratio. I could see 2700 if Saturn did away with the power gadgetry and A/C.

Either way, when you consider that the ION QC's power weight ratio is 20.2 lb/hp and the Red Line's is 14.5 lb/hp, the RL version is definitely no slouch and should be capable of 6.2-6.4 secs in the 0-60 sprint and between 14.5-15.0 secs in the quarter mile.
