Default 93 SW2 sudden loss of oil pressure

Got my 93 SW2 home.

Story from previous owner ( second hand info) the original owner - from southern Indiana was in Holland Michigan a few weeks back - and had the oil light come on - and a bit of lifter noise developed at the same time.

Any likely culprits come to mind?

I' ve been over this car - and it' s by far the cleanest gen one car I' ve seen. Interior near perfect, only a couple scratches in the paint - all the clear coat is still good. It even came with good Firestone tires. Just under 80 k miles.

I' D be happy even if I need to get a new engine for it.

Pressure switch failure. The switch is a 14mm X 1.5mm and with an adapter to 1/8 TIP you can connect a real gauge and see whats up but as it is a 5-7psi switch that is the first guess and the 2nd is something hard went through the oil pump and cut grooves in the pump cavity.

Get a mechanical oil pressure gauge and measure first!

Got a mechanical gauge, pulled the sensor - plumbed in mechanical line and starter it up.

Flat line.

Zero pressure.

Checked gauge. Gauge tests good.

Guess I' m pulling and rebuilding this one.

Cool. Can pull the bottom end, and put oil return holes in the oil ring groove.

This sucker will run a million miles.

Pistons must come out the top and the pressure failure is probably in the timing cover. You must find out exactly what caused this failure or it will happen again.

Agreed. Plan on total disassembly. I'm guessing either the overpressure valve came out, or the key sheared.

OPV is far from failure prone but a chunk of plastic guide will jam it open. Most likely cause is guide fragments in the pump and the timing cover recess is now sufficiently scored that all oil bypasses the pump back to the suction at low RPM. The pump is driven by the crank key and they do not shear.

Necropost...

I did fix this one. Pulled engine out bottom - and took off timing chain cover and disassembled oil pump. Bad OPV. Got new, reassembled. Good immediate oil pressure, and drove it a bit. Everything works ( except odometer). Total cost - less than $500.

Drove it over to a buddies house to show it off. He was impressed. He made an offer to double my money. I turned it down.

Next time - triple my money.
Next time - four times.

Yesterday he hit the right number. 5 X. He appealed to my sense of greed.

I put it up on the lift to let him see what a 26 year old, rust free SW2 looks like. Even his wife was impressed.

Oh well... It frees up garage space so I can buy another SC2..

Oil pump failure. Pull the timing cover and replace the pump assembly. Lifter chatter is a result of oil starvation and insufficient oil flow.

Connecting rod noise is a result of no pressure.

In your case, both are already starting to sustain damage. Don't drive the car.
