I am looking for a new engine but not sure where to find or look for one.
Mine has over 500,000km on it and today I found a fair amount of metal on the filter. There was bad engine noise in cold condition, so I imagine the engine does not have much life left in it. Would be happy to keep my old faithful friend running. |

I bought a wrecked 2002 Oldsmobile Alero with 150,000 miles on it just for the powertrain. I paid $300 for it and the engine was in good condition. I resealed the engine and transferred all the Saturn bolt on items. My daughter has been driving the LS1 and it is good. Uses no oil and runs fine, the car lives again. I had purchased the LS1 with 200,000 miles and a bad engine.
The L61 long block is the same until they went to variable cam timing and changed the tone ring on the crank somewhere in 2006?

I found an used engine with $185,000km offered at USD $800 and free delivery. If the engine is good and takes no oil, I am willing to pay the price, but how can one be sure? Hopefully the seller has more info. Getting an engine with less km on it would be even better, except it is probably impossible when it is a 20 year old model. |

What year is the engine? GM has made improvements to the timing chain design several times over the production run. I would have the timing chains, guides and tensioners replaced as well as the water pump. Reseal the engine and the tuneup plug boots and plugs. The different model cars used a few different cooling setups and manifolds, throttle bodies and starters. Just use the Saturn components and all the 6+1 tone ring engines will work. The late engines used 60-2 tone rings on the crank tone ring. Just be sure of the tone ring count or it will not run in your car.

This is the one I found and it should work, but I am not sure what I am getting.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/26506338657...EAAOSwMZBdj4FF I thought the sedans were smaller vehicles and would have used a smaller engine, but I was wrong. Cleaning and servicing the engine before installing it would be awesome, just not sure what costs I will be looking at in town. Most guys around don't even want to open an engine. |

Car-part.com is a great locating service in the States. Does not seem to like Canada postal codes. I do not know if there is a part locating service that ia similar. I have no idea of the duty charges on parts from the US.
There are several within 100 miles of Detroit in the price range of 4-800 US Dollars and a little over 100,000 miles.

I would at least remove the valve cover and take a look. Cheaper and easier than replacing the engine. And you know what you have.

I would love it to go this route, as I do not want to replace the original engine. The problem is, one of the auto shops in town told me they would not open the engine because in that case they "own it" and don't want to take a chance. The second outfit asked that I take a look at the filter for traces of metal. They said, if there is metal, it is not worth to open the engine. There is metal on the filter - a shiny film. Could this be from just the timing chain and guides? In addition, I had a leaking head gasket, which I believe is the reason for having to add engine oil. I can get a gasket set, maybe find a timing chain and whatever else I need, but it could be that the valves are worn too. The second outfit, I am sure will charge me $1,000 just to open the engine. So I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. But there are more auto shops in town, some I do not quite want to use. Last edited by bigcougar; 12-26-2021 at 06:25 PM. |

All you need to do for an inspection of the chain
and guides is to remove the valve cover.
