hard start, rpms high while shifting

Hi I am working on a 1998 Saturn SL1. The problem is when you leave off the gas to shift the rpms stays high. If you leave the clutch in for a bit the rpms thens drops to normal. Other systems are hard start or rough idle after start mainly when cold. It is also using considerable more fuel. Auto Zone tested the car and t returned a temperature sensor error. I replaced that sensor, but I don't believe that was the problem as it wasn't hooked up to begin with.

Could a egr valve or throttle position senor cause these simtems? Any suggestions appreciated

I'd start with cleaning the throttle body, especially around the sides and back of the plate, to see if that fixes the slow drop to idle. Might just be gunked up. This is a link to richpin's videos on Youtube - there's one that shows how to remove/clean it.

Did you notice the condition of the coolant temp sensor (aka ECTS)? If it had any corrosion on it, it needs to be replaced. Simply cleaning it out won't work... ask me how I know

You got the ECTS error because it was unpluggled. When it's plugged in, but the original resin tip is cracked or the connector is corroded, you won't get an error (service engine soon light) but it will cause the hard starting and high fuel usage you mentioned.

..and your high idle. The PCM is running it open loop continually.
