The best quote I got for a rebuilt was "about $2000", with me bringing him the engine. Most of these cars discussed here are $1500-3500 cars. That's easy math. (transmission not included)

Success depends on whether the person who rebuilt it knew what they were doing. You could end up with a substandard product that will run OK until the warranty is over. Where a good product might have run fine for 100,000 miles or more.
You should have some reason for trusting them. If I didn't have someone like Low Saturn near by, and the car was otherwise in good shape, I would have to get a Saturn crate engine and install it myself.

So far I have spent $540.00 on an in frame rebuild on my 96SW1. I’ll need to spend another $35.00 for fluids.
The best part is I know the job was done right and the pistons will have the drain holes. I done think most rebuilders would modify the pistons.

tell me more about an inframe rebuild? Do you have another thread on it somewhere? My son's 95 SL2 seems to have bit the dust and I'm contemplating what to do here - he can't afford another car right now...

You do an in frame rebuild when you can not find an engine hoist. Just remove the head, timing cover, and pan. It is basically a new rings, valve job and valve seals, and a new timing chain set and oil pump.

I don't have a problem with pulling the engine if necessary. However, if not necessary then that would be cool, too ... my engine experience is limited to older V8 engines, so this is new to me.
