2001 SC1
Default 2001 SC1 - Misfire - P0302

2001 SC1 - 171,000 miles - original owner

This site is freaking awesome. I am a complete car idiot (disclaimer) so go easy on me, but in the past I have used this site to easily fix some small problems (bad shifter linkage - saved me hundreds). However, now I have a bigger problem.

In the last two days my car has begin to misfire primarily while in 1st and 2nd gear and I got an SES, however it has sinced turned off. As suggested on this site I took it to Auto Zone and had code diagnosed (P0302). So it seems like everyone pretty much recommends changing plugs and wires first, so that is where I am at now. Should I move onto the coils next if this doesnt clear up the problem, as this seems seldomly to do the trick. As my car has never has the plugs and wired replaced its not going to hurt for sure.

I have been the only owner of this car, and have done almost no work to it except for one battery change and regular oil changes. Lots of highway miles, if you are wondering.

Thanks, this site is the best - can even help a complete helpless novice like myself.

You might get lucky and just find a corroded plug connection, a single bad wire, or something along those lines. Check the basics first. I've seen a number of cars (including our SL1) that developed bad misfires from a single plug wire coil connection being bad.

The coils don't go bad all that often. The plugs and wires will probably do it.

Problem fixed - thanks .

Replaced spark plugs (not platinum - gapped to .04") and wires, and car is running like a champ. The plugs I pulled out looked terrible, and had huge gaps in them.

SES light has gone off, however does that remained stored? Should I disconnect battery to clear out code? Probably not a big deal.

Thanks.

if you want to clear your codes.....yes go right ahead and disconnect your battery to do so............You really don't have to bother tho because your computer will clear it in time.
