Default Code Scanner

The SES light's on again, and at $26.50 a pop for a 1/2 hour diagnositc, I thought I'd better get a code scanner. Anyone have any recomendations for an ODB-II scanner that's reasonably priced?

You could get an Autotap for $249 but you'd need a pc to plug into it to to run the softwared that comes with it. The Tech 2 stand alone unit is about $2000 or so.

Hahahahahahahahahahah! *wipes tears*

Seriously though... $259 isn't _too_ (and I'd be the envy of every shade tree mechanic using my laptop to diagnosis the Saturn...)

huh? $259 isn't too what? i haven't gotten the autotap yet since my retailer doesn't charge me for code reading. they use the tech 2 so i'll have a tech drive with me in the passenger seat reading the screen and pushing buttons. obd-ii is sorta cool.

I meant to say too bad, but I guess my laughter got the best of me!

Whadya have to do to get your retail to give you free diagnostics? Mine would charge for the coffee and doughnuts if they could.

oh. i didn't do anything special to my retailer. i just bought a saturn from them and take it in for routine inspections every 3,000 miles. that's about it. when my car is on the lift i go back in the service are and look under it myself just to check things out and see what the techs have to say. they've been really cool and have pizza on monday and thursday (late nights) for customers waiting for service work to be done.

The j.c.whitney catalog has the "actron computer code reader" that is supposed to read any OBDII vehicle. It cost $180 plus whatever they charge for shipping.
