Strange rear wiper problem - Followed by wiper failure!

Have a 2009 Vue XE that has had the strange problem of the rear wiper operating when the rear hatch is opened. I saw a few references to that on these forums, but never saw anyone suggest a fix. It wasn't a big deal, but now the wiper won't work when the dash buttons are pushed.

I assume the problems are related but am not sure. Anyone had a similar problem and found a solution? Frayed wires, etc?

Remove the cover and take a look, sounds like a pinched now broken wire.
