Hi friends,
New here to the forum and appreciate any insights you can give on this issue! I'm pretty sure I'm dealing with a torque converter issue on my 2006 ION. Diagnostic code is P0700 - Transmission Control Module Requested MIL Illumination When the car is cold, it actually runs and drives pretty much fine. Occasionally there might be a slightly rough shift in 2nd or 3rd. As the car gets warm, coming to a stop or parking, and then engaging drive causes the engine to stall as the car slightly lurches forward. I know this is textbook torque converter territory. Strange thing is, reverse actually works OK - I can shift into reverse instead of drive, and it runs that way. Shifting back into drive will cause it to stall again. Checked all fuses, including #13 10 amp that could cause this issue. I have ordered a TCM replacement just as a first step in case that's the easy answer, but I'm guessing the torque converter needs to be replaced or serviced. Been searching through the forums and only found one other mention of stalling in drive but not in reverse. Wondering if this specific symptom makes sense on a mechanical level to anyone. Much appreciated! |

Is your xmission a conventional one or a cvt? The cvt doesn't have gears but uses an expensive segmented belt drive system with a pair of hydraulically controlled pulley shaves varying their diameters to control output speed. A cvt may not be repairable. Conventional electronically controlled automatics sometimes have pressure control solenoid issues with replacement fixing problems. Some background info below.

This one is a conventional transmission. I believe they stopped using the CVT's in 2004? At any rate, it does shift from gear to gear before it gets hot.
Edit: I should also clarify, I have not noticed any slippage in the transmission at all. An occasional, slightly jerky shift, but no slippage. So I think the clutch is fine. Appreciate the links - will investigate! Quote:
